Last summer there was one particularly fine evening of poetry in the Hemingway's series. It stands out as probably the best Hemingway's reading I've ever heard, and I've heard some good ones. Ed Ochester read, and so did the incomparable Jan Beatty. But the first batter in the lineup, in a sort of farewell performance in Pittsburgh before heading off to a new teaching position in Lincoln, Nebraska, was Stacey Waite. I'd heard her in open mike readings, but never a whole reading of her own. She set the tone for the evening, and was a good half of the reason it was such a great evening.
So I went home and ordered a copy of the lake has no saint. The basic review is that I'll be ordering all the rest of her books. Two favorites from this collection are "when loneliest in the mornings" and "when first to say i am sorry i am not at this point able to build what architects".
You can see some examples from her Main Street Rag collection here.
