The Hotel Under the Sand

I picked up a copy of Kage Baker's The Hotel Under the Sand at a World Fantasy convention, hoping to finally get to read something long by her, before we crossed paths. Sadly, she died around that time, and I fear that this may also have orphaned this fine magical-steampunky children's novel.
It starts in rather the fashion of The Secret Garden, with a young lady being torn from her family and thrown on an unfamiliar shore. In this case, literally, a shore. There she meets a ghost, who helpfully saves her from probable death. And soon the Hotel of the title, The Grand Wenlocke, is revealed. Adventures, and quite a lot of steady, dedicated labor, ensue.
This one's not very long, but it's an excellent read-it-to-the-youngsters book.
I will have to try another Baker title, someday.
