death to Earth

Today, as usual, ecology was rediculously depressing.
Basically , no predator ever takes more than 5% of the prey for food but the department of
Fisheries claims that for us to take over 40% is completely sustainable..... Basically we're outcompeting all other predators for fish and
yet somehow every few years leading scientists get together for a conference and ponder why the population of Stellar seal has declined by 85% over
the past 100 years. Hmm. thats a toughie.

Commercial open ocean fishing was so depleting fish reserves that it takes more energy to catch fish than the amount of energy brought in by them.
This translates to money and so commercial fishing is heavily subsidized by tax payers. Same goes for our methods of raising dairy and beef cattle. They take more energy than they give back.

Also the amount of legal hunting going on is sickening. In 1975 an organization called CITES was set up to prevent
too many animals from being killed or captured in the wild (legally) for various purposes ie piano keys, pets, medical experimentation,
fur coats. Since then, the numbers of legal kills has gone up dramatically. Here are some figures from 2002.
LEGAL kills
in one year
with 162 countries having signed the CITES agreement to protect all animals from endangerment

90 000 elephants (theres about 400 000 in the wild)
40 000 primates (about 10 000 to the US for medical experimentation)
4 million parrots
10 million reptiles
1 million rare plants
350 million coral reef fish (not for food)
15 million small mammals for making furs for clothing.

In one year. This is sickening.
And... this is worse. And a reason not to buy 'musky' smelling perfumes.
This practice is common. Very common. Especially for Chanel perfumes which i highly recommend you don't wear.

The tropical wild cat called the "something-er-other i cant remember" is prized for it's pheromones which come from the scent glands on its backside.
These pheromones are better the more volatile they are. Cosmetics people realized that the more stressed the animal is, the more volatile the compounds become. So, these wild cats are caught in the wild and put into small wooden boxes and deprived of food and water. That sounds pretty stressful, but hey, it makes a better perfume. Some smart guy realized that increased temperature also increases stress. So they light fires outside of the wooden boxes to further stress the cat. I guess this makes a great smell, huh?
I want to go to a Chanel counter at the Bay and ask them what they think of this.
Or maybe start a protest at one. Anyone with me?

Sorry this is so long... ugh. I could go on about many many other aspects of how we've ruined everything.
