So of course its been ages since I've updated this livejournal thing but to be completely honest, I hate writing about my dull ass life. So thankfully I have something interesting to say after months of boredom.
Two weeks ago my blues band played on T.V, we performed a blues/punk version "Baby, please don't go". With Richard going ape shit on guitar and howling like a mad man and Cody and I pounding the hell out of the rhythm. It was in front of a live studio audience and when I look out at the crowd, there was a look of mass confusion. Try to remember that this was what the whole cultral ravolution was trying to keep out of china. Richard pointed out that we were like Elvis going on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time knowing that we were going to do something that no one had ever been heard or seen before. But we weren't shot from the waist up and I can't ever envision us three become national icon of any sort in any country.
We were originally going to do something a little more chiller because this was some kind of Chinese New Years family special, and we didn't want to rub any party leader the wrong way. But after we rehearsed a few songs in front of the producers, one of them stood up and said in his broken English " No, we T.V man want very crazy, ok?" Which we all replied with a confused "ok". So we got the green light act like maniacs on stage which we intern did.
We shared the stage that day with all kinds of performers that really made us stand out like freaks more than we already did. Such as a group of 5 year old ballet dancers in little red too-too's, a traditional chinese opera ground with a full on band, crazy ass customs and kung fu tumblers. Those kids were the shit, most of them were about 10 or 12 years old and none of them had ever met a foreigner. I spent most of the day practicing my chinese with them and somehow teaching them how to play poker. There were also a pile of dances groups and some local pop acts that did the usual lip sinking bit.
After the show I got a call from an Australian friend named Sky who was in the 5th row. I asked her what the Chinese people were saying while we were on stage and she remarked that most of them just wanted to know what the hell Richard was saying. This was a little upsetting because we specifically chose that song because of the lyrics. If you have almost no English, chances you should know these words; baby , please , don't and go. But I guess we over estimated our audiences grasp of English.
And that was that, who knows how the public will react to this when it is aired on the 16th, which is by the way chinese new years eve. Hopefully we won't get deported.
Oh ya, Changchun is holding the Asian Winter games and tonight I'm going to see a hockey game between......get this...... The United Arab Emirates versus Kuwait. This kind of entertainment is a once in a lifetime event.
