Personality: Mato is somewhat of an amazing derp, albeit a cheerful one that's pretty outgoing. In the start of the OVA, she's seen brushing her teeth while talking to her mother at the same time, and later juggling a piece of toast she took right out of the toaster. When she first meets Yomi, this is no exception; the opening remark Mato makes to Yomi is about their height. ("My height?" "Yeah, you're tall. Must be nice.") She likes star-themed things, as evident by the decorations in her room, her regular clothes, and her cellphone strap. Mato even later gives Yomi a matching strap ("I noticed your phone doesn't have a strap. I think it's rather lonely.")
Of course, along with being a derp, Mato is also naive, and tends to be oblivious. When Mato and Yomi are placed in separate classes in their second year of middle school, Mato more or less tries to remain optimistic about this, visiting Yomi before and after classes each day. However, when Mato makes a new friend out of Yuu, a girl on her basketball team, she doesn't realize Yomi's growing jealousy towards this sudden rift in their friendship, and is caught off guard when Yomi goes missing.
At first, Mato is awkward around people she doesn't know, and is sensitive and meek. When detectives visit Mato's house to ask her about Yomi's disappearance, Mato breaks down crying. She stays up all night staring at her cellphone, waiting for some sort of message or sign Yomi is okay, and when she gets a blank text supposedly from Yomi's phone, Mato takes this as a sign, and takes her bike to go look for her. Over the course of the OVA, and by the time of her merging with Black★Rock Shooter, Mato gains the courage she needs to rescue Yomi from Dead Master's possession.
Black★Rock Shooter, however, is simply quiet and more or less none too sociable. She doesn't speak until she merges with Mato, and is dedicated towards finding Dead Master, and freeing Yomi from her. Basically, B★RS focuses on nothing but her current goal, and won't allow herself to become distracted. This doesn't mean B★RS is mean or cruel, however, just simply dedicated towards the ones she cares about.
Abilities: As Mato, none, except for her skills in basketball and her derpiness. As Black★Rock Shooter, enhanced reflexes (harder better faster stronger), and the ★Rock Cannon, which can also become a katana.
