I said I wouldn't go down without a fight.
And it showed.
I ended up getting a II on my solo, just inches away from a I again. The judge said that he liked my aggressive style very much, but that it also led to my downfall. He said I only played in an aggressive style, which helped in the second part of the piece, but led to destruction in the first.
I knew I wasn't gonna get a I anyways as I walked in. It was too early to play (8 AM!), my cankersore on the corner of my lips bloomed, and lips were still chapped. Still almost made it.
But unlike last year, I didn't have to match up to Nicki and her family. That being said, I was content with ending with a II.
The ensemble was another story entirely.
Me, Jeff, Mike, Sous, Todd, and Tyler did a preliminary run before the actual thing, to great response from the public.
Then came time to play.
It started off well, we were all in the zone, up until the middle of the first half. My second valve broke. It wouldn't move! Everyone in the sextet noticed. Everyone in the audience noticed. And I was waiting for the judge to notice...but he didn't! He dropped his music score on the floor!
Using two fingers to play the 1st and 3rd valves, and two to fix the second, I faked my part while I fixed the valve. By the time the judge got his stuff in order, I was all set.
We walked into that room to have fun.
We walked out with a I.
For me, not bad for a guy who played tuba for only 3 weeks.
So we're going to States. Suck on that, Nicki!!!
That is all, sports fans. Later!
