sitting at the corner of lake and hennepin listening to dylan's "desolation row" and patiently awaiting the express bus to campus, just three blocks from the site of the senseless murder of a twenty-five year old man just four days prior. a man approaches, followed by another man with an expensive video camera. he hands me a card, advises me to read through it, shares that he would love my cooperation. he walks away and i glance at the card, which is word-for-word transcribed below.

i refuse to live in fear. i refuse to allow this faceless killer to make a dent on my life and lifestyle. i refuse to believe that groups of frantic-but-trained gunmen parading the streets will improve the state and safety of the world. if i someday fall victim to such an absurd crime then so be it. i understand that the innocent and the defenseless, too, must sometimes suffer in this terrifying world meticulously cultured of mortal fear alone-- and i am no exception.
