It is easy to forget sometimes that the Fullmetal Alchemist is nothing more than a teenager, a child still in some respects. However, Maria Ross knows. She knows this very well. She has seen him at moments when few others had. She knows exactly how human he is, despite his great skill with alchemy. She knows that from time to time, when Alphonse isn’t looking, Ed will have moisture in the corners of his eyes. He must be tired of all of this, Maria thinks to herself. She can only imagine how tired he really is. So when his powers had attained Godlike levels in Lab Five due to all the red water he was exposed to, she knows just what to do. She treats the Fullmetal Alchemist not like an alchemist, not like a dog of the military, not even like a god. She treats him as a child as she wraps her arms around him, letting him know that he is safe, that he is cared for, and perhaps most importantly that he is loved. Everyone looks at her as if she is slightly crazy, but Ross knows just how to handle the situation and what to do. She can’t help but know.
