I got a new job a couple weeks ago, as a driver for a bakery. They put an ad in the newspaper saying they were going to start delivering pizza, so with my two years as a pizza driver for the local pizza empire, I was a natural choice for the job, and have been busting my ass to get their delivery service off the ground, personally walking the streets hanging and passing out over 1000 door hangers with our menu and coupons printed on them. So far we haven't had a ton of deliveries, but almost every single customer has tipped me, which is dfzjsglk, amazing, I got tips from maybe half my customers at the previous job.
It isn't all pizza delivery though. When there's not a delivery they've got me washing dishes if the normal dishwasher isn't there, or helping make salads, pizzas, mix up salad dressings or marinara... I made some sort of sauerkraut spread for a reuben sandwich the other day. I'm also in charge of sweeping, mopping, and throwing out the trash. They keep me moving and are really busting my ass, I easily do way more prep work and cleaning than I do driving.
It's a hard job, but I still feel fulfilled by it, and I am hanging in there with the hopes that my advertising will result in a lot more business for me on deliveries, and that my hard work will get recognized and I'll be seen as a boon to their business, given more hours and a raise. My main concern is that they flew through a lot of things when they were teaching me to make pizzas in particular, and mixing salad dressings, so a lot of times I'll be asked to do something and I'll do it too slowly, because I'm learning, and someone will jump in and take over. I realize it's a restaurant and speed is required, but I'm never going to get faster or learn to do things correctly if someone jumps in and does it for me every time I'm trying to do it. And the more times this happens, the more times I feel strikes counted against me. So I work extra hard, even go around on my days off hanging door hangers, and always show up early for my shifts, in hopes that this dedication will counter my lackluster performance in certain areas. All the while, I try to do things faster and better in the hopes that my improvement in those areas will come quickly.
The bakery I work in, is housed in a building that was built in 1901. It served as a bank until the 1960's. It was, I have no idea what it was until the mid 90's when it became a bakery. The two original 107 year old vaults are still inside. One houses two refrigerators and a load of canned goods, pots and pans, and seasonings. The other is our paper safe (boxes, containers, plastic goods, etc) and for the record, the dish sink has no disposal, so if just enough food goes down the drain when I'm washing dishes, shit clogs up and I can't use the automatic dishwasher because water overflows into the sink and out one of the floor drains. Washing the aftermath of a lunch service by hand = not fun.
But the tips and the paycheck = fun
So I'll keep trying hard.
Annnnnd that was my non FFXI update for the year.
Oh yeah, there is a really cute girl who just got hired on, but I think she has a boyfriend. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. heh
