OMG! you cannot make me cry so early in the afternoon, I haven't had a decent cup of coffee yet .... this is utterly beautiful and sad but I want tot think that Ianto could understand .... John's gesture was a nice one, for a change ....
I'm sorry, I am trying to write fluff for my love_bingos but it's not really happening. Thank you :-) Of course Ianto will understand. I like to believe that John really did care for Jack. Ok he was a bit of a psycho, but he wasn't all bad - he did come back to help after Gray released him. And Jack is a very loving person, he needs people around him. I think that when he left Earth, after a few months he would be lonely and would recognise that he needed a friendly face. And John is someone that he might seek out for that reason.
I so badly want to make everything right and give Ianto back to poor future Jack, it's so sad. =(
Love the little coda, I'm sure Ianto guesses the Jack on the phone must be from the future, and that means Ianto himself will die before much longer. What a terrible burden to carry.
Thanks for the beta on this one and suggesting how I should round it off.
It is quite a burden to carry, knowing that he must die soon, but also it must be a comfort to know that even several years later Jack is still thinking of him enough to want to make things right between them.
*Gasp* Oh my goodness! I'm all choked up right now. This is so powerfully written, and so poignant! I think I saw "love bingo" and was expecting some lovey-dovey fluff, but really, that will teach me. I guess the silver lining in all this is Jack and John seem to have resolved their differences and found a way to be together. I like to think after Gray, John grew up enough for Jack to be with him again. At least with John, Jack doesn't have to hide his past anymore! Small consolation, but at least it's something.
My heart breaks for Ianto too, who was just trying to have a normal day. Now he knows something's up. I kind of wonder what Jack will say to Ianto, or if he even manages to say anything at all. I like that you left the story where you did, though. The point is that Jack made the call, not so much what happened afterwards.
Sorry it wasn't a fluffy story... but I think it was you that told me love bingo didn't have to be fluffy! It is still about love.... I have tried to do some fluffy love_bingo fills, but mostly they are turning out sad or angsty. That's just where my bunnies are taking me.
I'm pleased that you liked that I left the story there - although my original idea centred around the phone call itself, then I started writing and wrote the scene with Jack and John and how the phone call came about and I realised that was actually more powerful than anything I could have written as a conversation between Jack and Ianto. And badly_knitted did a great job helping me to round it off. :-)
No need to apologize--my personal tastes run to angst more than fluff anyway--it's just that I wasn't expecting it. And yes, it was me that said love didn't have to be fluffy. I just didn't know you'd actually listen to me. ;)
