Decisions are hard to make whether they’re mundane decisions or life-changing ones. Wu Fan knows this a little too well. He’s been faced with some rather tough decisions in the past couple years if he must say so himself. Some of his decisions had good results such as the time he finally worked up the courage to ask Yixing out on a simple date. Some of his decisions had terrible results such as the time when he thought that taking Yixing out on a date to a Chinese circus when it turned out that Yixing was terrified of fire and spent most of the night cowering behind Wu Fan. Getting back to the main point, Wu Fan was now being faced with probably the toughest decision that presented itself to him year after year, without fail.
What in the world did Zhang Yixing want for Valentine’s Day?
No matter what Wu Fan got Yixing for Valentine’s Day he always acted pleased but then again, Yixing was relatively easy to please but this year, he wanted to do something special for him. Chocolates were too cliché but Yixing did enjoy sweets so that was still an option to consider. A moonlight picnic could go disastrously wrong, Wu Fan would know since he speaks from experience, so scratch that. He highly doubted Yixing would care about roses, they were useless anyway, so that didn’t seem like a good idea. Wu Fan was running out of ideas and he groaned, leaning against the stiff back of his desk chair. His desk was covered in various post-it notes with numerous scratched out ideas, one seemingly worse than the other. Then, an idea struck him. No, like, this was an idea to end all brilliant ideas. This idea was so brilliant it could have cured cancer. Why didn’t Wu Fan just ask Yixing what he wanted for Valentine’s Day? Yes. Brilliant. Well, in retrospect, this idea only seemed good in the light of all his other failed ideas but it was still worth a try. But Valentine’s Day presents had to be a secret or something, right? Wasn’t it some kind of unspoken rule? But of course Wu Fan, being the smart genius he was, would definitely be able to sneakily ask Yixing what he wanted for Valentine’s Day.
Day 1
Mission Objective: Secretively Find out What Yixing Wants for Valentine’s Day
“Good morning, Xingxing!” Wu Fan called in a sing song voice, plastering on a smile as he sauntered into the kitchen. Yixing turned around, a look of utmost horror on his face. He stared at Wu Fan in silence, his mind searching for the proper words to react to a situation like this.
“First of all, don’t call me that. And second of all, who are you and what have you done with Wu Fan?” Yixing stammered.
The blonde shrugged. “What’s wrong with being cheerful in the morning?”
“You’re never cheerful.” The other deadpanned, still staring at Wu Fan as if he couldn’t believe his eyes.
“Mm, that’s a lie.” Wu Fan placed a quick kiss on Yixing’s cheek and moved over to examine the stove. “Breakfast looks good today!”
“Seriously, what is wrong with you today?”
Wu Fan finally sighed and dropped the whole façade and suddenly gripped Yixing by the shoulders, taking advantage of his surprise and pushing him against the kitchen counter, the sharp corners digging into Yixing’s back before the smaller had any time to react.
“Seriously, what do you want, Wu Fan-“ Yixing’s exasperated sigh was cut off by Wu Fan placing a finger to his lips, silencing him.
“I have something very important to ask you. It’s very, very important. You can’t let another soul know of this.”
Yixing’s eyes widened a bit but he nodded, his body tensing, expecting the worst. Every little thing he had done in the past week seemed to flash before his eyes. Did Wu Fan think he was cheating on him because he was hanging out with Luhan or something? Each possibility was worse than the next. Just when he thought he couldn’t take the silence for a moment longer, it was broken.
“What do you want for Valentine’s Day?” Wu Fan blurted out.
There was a dead silence in the house and it was so quiet Wu Fan could have sworn he heard the Jeopardy music from his neighbor’s house playing and he silently thought that it really fit the mood. Then Yixing suddenly rolled his eyes and pushed Wu Fan away.
“YOU SERIOUSLY WORRIED ME THERE I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOING TO BREAK UP WITH ME OR SOMETHING. THAT WAS A REALLY DICK MOVE OF YOU, WU FAN.”
“WELL I WAS JUST WONDERING! IT WAS AN IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ME!”
Yixing took in a deep breath, closing his eyes, and counting to three before exhaling again and he repeated this several times before he could look Wu Fan in the eye again without wanting to punch him in the face. “How many times have I told you that I don’t want something for Valentine’s Day?”
“You never told me that.”
“You just forgot.”
“Maybe you forgot that you told me.”
“That doesn’t make any sense.”
“IT MADE SENSE IN MY HEAD.”
“I hate you, Wu Fan.”
“I love you too, Xingxing.”
“Shut up and stop calling me that or else you’re not going to get breakfast.” Yixing said, pushing Wu Fan aside and the threat of no breakfast shut him up effectively for the rest of the morning. Actually, for the rest of the day. But then again, that was only because Wu Fan kind of forgot about the entire Valentine’s Day incident.
Day 1: Mission Failure
Day 2
Mission Objective: Try Very Subtly to Find out What Yixing Wants for Valentine’s Day
After yesterday’s failure, Wu Fan vowed that today he would be much more subtle. It was time for a change of tactics. He hoped that perhaps Yixing forgot all about yesterday and knowing his terrible memory, he probably did. At least he didn’t have Anterograde Amnesia or something that sounded like it could turn into a really sad story. Anyways, Yixing decided that it would be fun to go shopping at the mall and drag Wu Fan along with him. Normally Wu Fan would protest (but he always ended up going with Yixing anyway) but this time, he went along without a single complaint. Why? The more he stalked Yixing while he was shopping, the more chances he would get to find out what he wanted for Valentine’s Day. Yixing actually really didn’t have a destination in mind and wanted to just walk around the mall. Normally Wu Fan would comment that this was a huge waste of time but he kept his mouth shut because if he played it smart, he could find out what Yixing wanted and use his time wisely and just buy the gift now and somehow find a way to keep it a secret from Yixing. Hard, yes. But impossible? No. Nothing was impossible for the almighty Wu Fan.
“Hey, Xingxing.”
“I told you not to call me that.”
“Do you want chocolates?”
“For what?”
“For the you-know-what day.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Wu Fan let out a small sigh and grabbed Yixing’s much smaller hand and dragged him inside to the gaudily decorated chocolate shop which was bedecked in various shades of red and pink. He pointed to one of the heart shaped boxes, looking expectantly at Yixing. Did he really have to spell everything out to him?
“Why are you pointing at a box of chocolates.”
“It’s not ANY box of chocolates. It’s a HEART shaped box of chocolates.”
“What about it?”
Wu Fan mentally facepalmed.
“Chocolates? For Valentine’s Day?”
Yixing gave Wu Fan and incredulous look. “Why couldn’t you just have said that earlier?”
“It was supposed to be a secret.”
“Good job keeping your secret. Very discreet.” Yixing snorted sarcastically.
“It was worth a try.” Wu Fan shrugged.
Day 2: Mission Failure
Day 3
Mission Objective: Find a Last Minute Valentine’s Day Present and Hope Yixing Doesn’t Reject It
Wu Fan was officially out of time. February 14th. Valentine’s Day. And he still had no gift for Yixing. He was in deep trouble. Yixing had said time and time again that he really didn’t need anything for Valentine’s day but Wu Fan had always, without fail, gotten at least some type of gift but this year, he was really out of ideas. Wu Fan flipped through the various Valentine’s Day cards on display in the tacky little card shop but alas, nothing. It was already nearing evening but he still hadn’t found a gift for Yixing. Was shopping for a Valentine’s gift normally this hard? Wu Fan pursed his lips and checked his watch. Yixing would be home in an hour and he still didn’t have a gift. One of the only options he was looking at that seemed plausible was to go home and attempt to make a homemade present. What was that one saying again? It’s the thought that counts, right? Probably looking like a madman, Wu Fan scurried out of the shop and nearly sped home, nearly mowing over some kid crossing the street on the way back to their apartment.
He checked his watch again. Still forty minutes left. Okay. There was still time to think of something, right?
Wu Fan snatched up a piece of pink (obnoxious hot pink at that) scrapbook paper from the neat pile that Yixing always left at the end of the table and plopped down in a chair, pen in hand.
Okay, great, homemade card had seemed like a good idea back at the store but now what? After wasting about ten minutes trying to remember a line from one of Shakespeare’s poems, he decided to sketch out a dragon which looked a bit deformed and looked more like a snake with wings than a dragon but hey, it was the thought that counted. Thirty minutes left. A simple drawing wasn’t good enough. What about something romantic sounding? Like a poem? Problem was, Wu Fan didn’t exactly have a way with words. So he wrote the first thing he could think of and almost instantly regretted it but he didn’t have time to change it because just then, he heard a light knock at the door. Out of all days Yixing had to come home early. Why did it have to be today?
Wu Fan opened the door and was greeted by the sight of a grinning Yixing, holding the very same box of chocolates Wu Fan had offered to buy him and a bouquet of red roses. If Wu Fan hadn’t known better he would have thought his life suddenly turned into a Korean Drama.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, Wu Fan.” Yixing gave a small smile, a light blush tinting his cheeks and Wu Fan felt like he had been transported back five years to his first Valentine’s Day spent with Yixing, being greeted by the same dimpled smile and clichéd gifts. He pulled the younger in, shutting the door with his foot, pressing his lips against Yixing’s. Wu Fan could taste tiny hints of chocolate on Yixing’s lips, he tasted like warmth and comfort, and dare he say it, love. Yixing broke apart and gingerly placed the gifts in Wu Fan’s arms. “I know I don’t normally get you something for Valentine’s but since we’ve been together for five years, I wanted to make today special.”
Wu Fan couldn’t help but grin. To think Yixing had gone out of his way just to get him gifts on Valentine’s day made his heart want to burst with joy and after hurriedly setting the gifts on the table, he pulled the younger closer, peppering his nose and forehead with feathery kisses, Yixing nuzzled his face into Wu Fan’s chest, losing himself in his warmth and comfort. Wu Fan would have been content to stay like that with Yixing for awhile longer but of course, he had to ruin the mood by suddenly mumbling an apology and reaching over and grabbing his homemade Valentine’s card, and hesitatingly presenting it to Yixing, his heart racing when he remembered that of course, he never had time to erase that stupid poem he had written in two seconds.
He was about to reclaim the card but it was too late, it was already in Yixing’s possession.
Yixing chuckled a little at the sight of the dragon but he appreciated Wu Fan’s effort. He squinted, attempting to make sense out of Wu Fan’s sloppy hand writing.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Zhang Yixing, I love you.
Yixing immediately burst out into laughter, nearly doubling over and Wu Fan looked mortified, his cheeks turning a deep shade of red. “Don’t laugh! It was last minute!” He pushed Yixing who burst out into laughter again at the sight of Wu Fan’s facial expression. Yixing really had tried to hold back his laughter for Wu Fan’s sake but after that poem, it was rather hard but he eventually managed to regain control of himself.
“I had to get you something, right? At least I took the time out of my day to write you a poem!” Wu Fan rubbed the back of his neck, still reeling from his fatally wounded pride.
“You know never needed to get me something. All I wanted for Valentine’s Day was to be with you and to see you smile, Wu Fan. That’s all I ever want.”
“Ew you’re really cheesy, Yixing, you know that?”
“But everything I said is true. And are you really the one to be talking?”
“Yeah, but I’m not that cheesy.”
“You sure about that?” Yixing rolled his eyes and was about to come up with a clever retort when he suddenly stopped midway and cleared his throat. “Well, actually, I have a poem for you too.”
“You do?” Wu Fan asked, eyeing Yixing suspiciously.
Yixing gave a bit of a mischievous smirk before announcing in an overly dramatic voice:
“Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Kris Wu Fan, I love you.”
