"Me? Surrender? Never!" Despite his 'proud' words, there was a laugh that accompanied them right along with it. He was almost going to say something about her having good tastes, but he thought better of it and simply replied with an amused, "You most certainly do."

Zack had seen Cloud in just about everything but a dress, but he still found himself highly amused at the thought. Cloud had the right feminine aspects to his features to pull it off. There was no way he could have. He whistled at the thought before glancing down at Aerith in amusement, "Should I take a wild stab in the dark and suggest that you were the one who put him up to it?"

He blinked once in confusion as Aerith's gaze dropped away and he thought he sighted a blush on her face. There was a small part within him that wondered if he was doing the right thing by even being here with Aerith, but he shook his head and pushed it to the back of his mind.

"I'm not surprised to hear that about Spike," He murmured fondly. Cloud had always had that tight assed quality surrounding him, but that was just part of what made his best friend who he was. This was the first time that he'd ever been with Cloud to the beach even if he'd been to Costa quite a few times back in the day... it was the first time being here with Aerith as well, for that matter.

"Yeah, but Spike looking like a tomato would be well worth his pain and discomfort," Okay, he was half joking with that. The initial sight would be funny, but the pain not so much. It was nothing a good potion couldn't heal though. Shaking the thoughts away from his mind, Zack smiled back at Aerith as he asked, "So how are you finding the beach?"

"Okay, okay," Aerith held her free hand up as a white flag. "I like a good challenge anyway!" Her smile turned into a grin as he concurred with her, and her hold on his arm tightened affectionately. It wasn't like he could make a crack about that comment, as he happened to be in the category of 'good taste'.

In all honesty, Aerith doubted Tifa could coerce Cloud into such a thing. She was strong-willed, but she didn't have as good of a poker face as the flower girl did. It was truly a task for her to handle alone. And... well, no one else was with them, anyway. "Yup. We got everything at the wall market; the dress, the wig, the shoes, the perfume... and a tiara!" she snorted softly. That one was just an additional cherry on top.

"Not me either, really... but I still complained," she laughed. Cloud was right to push them onwards anyway. He couldn't blame her though, she hadn't ever been beyond the Slums. She wanted to soak in new sights rather than pass by them.

She laughed at that, knowing they both took quite a bit of pleasure in Cloud's annoyances and discomfort. But she wasn't entirely fond of seeing him in pain in any situation, unless she was pinching him. That was pretty funny. She returned back to the conversation just as he did, and smiled happily. "I love it! The sea air, the weather..." her arm spread out wide. "It's a lovely atmosphere. You just always feel relaxed here, like all your worries will wash away with the ocean." At least for a short time, which was what she thought they all sorely needed.

"You really went all out on that," He murmured in amusement. There was a small part of his mind that wondered if that was the time that Cloud had worn women's underwear. Probably, and it was a thought that made him inwardly snicker. "Good job in getting him to wear a tiara, by the way."

A little bit of complaining never hurt anyone, but he was glad that Aerith finally managed to get out of the slums and see more of the world. It was something he had wanted to do with her, but there simply hadn't been enough time. "I'm really glad to hear that you got to head out and travel," He murmured happily as they finally approached the beach.

There were a few more people out here than there were before, and he found that he couldn't help but agree with Aerith's assessment. "The beach is good for that," He said in full agreement. Glancing down, he smiled encouragingly at Aerith as he asked, "So ready for that dip?"

She really had, but found that men dressing as women needed to go to the full extent. Cloud had femininity naturally, but Aerith wanted to be sure he'd pass as a female without even a second glance. "Why thank you," she giggled. "I'm proud of myself!"

Traveling had indeed been something she always wanted to do, but never had the money or courage to. Leaving Elmyra alone was hardly something she could do, and, well, she liked being in the church so that Zack would always know where to find her. After his time, she simply couldn't find the right means until Cloud came around. "Me too! Remember all those stories you would tell me about Junon and the mountains?" she smiled. "It was fun bringing them to life."

Not bothering to take a scan of their surroundings, Aerith broke away from Zack to shed her summer dress to expose her bathing suit. She neatly folded it into her arms, then set it down into the sand. "Yup!" she replied cheerfully once she stood back up, making sure to grasp onto his hand for security. If she got too deep into the water, she'd actually have to swim and that would definitely be a disaster. Fear aside, she began tugging him towards the shore in excitement, "C'mon! We're getting old just standing here!"

"Hell I'm proud of you," Zack wasn't kidding either. Just the thought of seeing Cloud in a dress would have been worth the trouble of convincing the blonde.

"Yeah, I remember," Zack couldn't help but smile at how enthusiastic Aerith was when it came to travelling. It was good to see her so happy, and while he could only end up painting her a small picture of what the world outside of Midgar was like, she had eventually been given the opportunity to see it all. "I just hope that you didn't find any discrepancies with my stories." He said with a sheepish grin. While Zack wouldn't lie to Aerith, ever, he did embellish the truth from time to time to make his stories that little bit more exciting.

Zack didn't need to take anything off, considering he'd just been wearing his swimming trunks anyway, but he'd caught himself staring as Aerith removed her dress. It only lasted for a split-moment before he politely forced his attention back up to the flower girl's face, but he still couldn't help but feel subtly ashamed.

"Well we can't have that happening!" The SOLDIER said with a laugh as Aerith began dragging his willing self over to the water. He increased his pace up to walk alongside Aerith, and after a quick squeeze of her hand, Zack found himself smiling fondly at her as he murmured, "We're both too young to be getting old just yet. Besides, we've still got too much we've got to enjoy before then, right?"

Aerith grinned, but said nothing to that. Sure, now it seemed a far fetched, but at the time when he had Zack's characteristics it wasn't so difficult to imagine.

"Well...you said the mountains were as tall as the sky," she eyed him with feigned wariness. "I saw the peaks, mister!"

She laughed in delight as he joined her pace, dropping the jog into a walk towards the sea. "Right! We've gotta grab life by the reigns, you know!" She turned back to the shore, and boldly began stepping into the water. It was chilly, but not unpleasantly so. Aerith glanced to Zack, and squeezed his hand a little, "Just... don't stray away, okay?"

Zack gasped at her accusation before he pouted playfully. "Hey, I was there on a cloudy day," He playfully whined in his defence. Not that he minded at all, and he was happy to see her playing along.

There was a sense of pride seeing Aerith so boldly walking into the water as if she'd done it hundreds of times before. People may have been dazzled by his smile from time to time, but Zack always found his breath taken away by Aerith's complete spark of life. It had been what had originally drawn her to him, outside of the fall of course, and once he'd noticed it, the SOLDIER had been unable to keep away.

"You know I'd never leave your side, Aerith." Zack warmly murmured as he walked further into the cool water with her. Moving to step around, the SOLDIER reached down to take hold of her other hand as he asked, "So how about we try seeing how you go with swimming? That way you can surprise Spike the next time you see him."

Aerith shook her head stubbornly, but wound up laughing instead. It was hard to banter with Zack having a straight face. She could hardly think of a time when she actually could be seriously upset with him as it was, so joking around was clearly impossible. She didn't bother letting it continue, otherwise he'd be named the victor.

"Never?" she repeated with a small smile, and hid sadness despite how it rushed over. He had always promised her that, hadn't he? In a lot of ways, Aerith had to agree he kept his word.... Just not physically, which was what she had often longed for. She pushed the thoughts aside and grasped onto his other hand willingly, stepping deeper into the water. Her eyes tore away from his gaze and to the ocean that was enveloping both their bodies. Well, hers quicker than his. Being tall had too many darn perks!

"Erm..." Aerith smiled a little nervously, but fought back the urge to instantly deny the idea. No, this was a new experience and something to learn. Besides, she doubted she was in much danger at all around Zack as it was. "Okay!" her smile brightened up. "How do...you swim, exactly?"

"I think you already know the answer to that," Zack saw the small smile, and despite better judgement, Zack couldn't help it as he leant in to press a light kiss to her forehead. He might have placed her as second when it came to protecting Cloud's life on that day, and even though he hadn't yet experienced it himself, Zack knew without any shadow of a doubt, that she had been on his thoughts.

The contact didn't last for long and as soon as she grasped his hand in return, the SOLDIER began to move them deeper into the waters. He only went so far that it would cover up to Aerith's shoulders. Zack didn't want her getting overwhelmed at all.

"The first thing about learning how to swim is to have trust in your partner. So forget about the water and the waves, and just focus all of your attention on me," Zack announced as he kept his hold on her hands. He knew there would be no problem in that regard, but he simply had to wait until she felt comfortable enough to begin teaching her how to swim. "Do you trust me enough to do that, Aerith?"

Aerith made a soft sound of concurment as she felt his lips against her forehead. She unashamedly leaned into it, feeling her smile widen and remain even as he pulled away. It was strange that such a simple gesture had already pulled her from reality and left her pleasantly isolated with Zack. The deep waters hardly even crossed her mind until she was chest deep and more vulnerable than she ever had been to the ocean.

"Zack," she began at first in hushed worry as he spoke, but slowly urged herself to heed his words and concentrate on mako-infused eyes instead. She nodded gently, smiling. "I trust you." she murmured honestly, though wondered if he could hear her heart racing underwater.

The smile on his face only seem to grow at the sight of Aerith's expression. He never wanted to see her in any other way, in all honesty, and he knew he'd do whatever he could do to protect Aerith's happiness.

He could sense her worry, but he never once broke eye contact with her. She had every right to be nervous. That was natural, though, and Zack wasn't about to go anywhere. "I'm right here with you," He softly murmured with a smile. "Now I'm going to let go of one of your hands to help you get started. So there's nothing to be alarmed with."

Zack lightly squeezed his right hand against her left to indicate that was the hand he was going to remove. He did so slowly while keeping his left arm taunt enough to continue supporting Aerith as he moved to stand at her right side.

"First we need to get you used to just floating in the water and keeping your head up, 'kay?" Shifting his hand down to lay flat on her stomach, Zack's attention never once left Aerith's gaze as he asked, "Tell me when you're ready to give it a try."

He had a knack for being especially calming, and Aerith forced away fear with a smile in return. "Okay," she murmured, concentrating on him and not the depth or the fact she'd lose his support. As his hand slipped away her arm impulsively moved to flail, but the flower girl caught herself and simply stared wide eyed at Zack.

Terrifying, she thought. But thrilling.

"I'm ready," she replied with determination. Flailing was a no go, she just had to keep her arms and legs moving, right? That couldn't be so bad. "I'll make you proud! Eheh," Assuming she didn't right out scream and latch onto him.

Zack knew that the fear would remain until she got entirely used to being in the water, but that was fine since it would give Aerith just the right amount of adrenaline to overcome this step. She was wide-eyed, yes, but there was a determination within that caused him to smile warmly.

"You always make me proud, Aerith. Now just relax your body for the time being and just feel the water flowing around you." He murmured before he started to apply pressure to the hold he had on her stomach. Aerith just needed water-confidence, and Zack didn't want to start teaching her to swim until she felt more comfortable with the water all around her. Slowly he began to add more pressure until the point where she'd begin lifting up into the water, "Keep your head above the water."

As instructed, Aerith let her body relax and tried her best to ignore the waves that splashed up against them. Every time they came to the beach, the waves seemed taller and taller to her. She gave Zack a smile as he assured her of his confidence; rising up to her task now with double the determination. She wouldn't let him down, even though the prospect of clinging onto him for dear life still was appealing.

Her body slowly moved in the water so that her toes lifted from the ground and her weight was solely reliant on Zack. Not that she was particularly worried about being dropped, but her hand lightly grasped onto his arm for comfort. She kept her head straight up so that water barely brushed at her chin, and her smile returned. "Am I doing it right, Zack?"

He slowly raised her up from the support of the sandy sea floor while keeping a trained eye out for any signs of panic. There were some signs of concern as her hand reached out for his arm for comfort, but when he sighted the smile on her face, Zack definitely found himself proud of her for beginning to overcome her fears.

"You most certainly are," His words were warm as he spoke. Keeping his hand firmly on her stomach to keep her supported, he watched as Aerith's body remained floating among the soft current. "Close your eyes and tell me how it feels."

Aerith's smile widened at Zack, and slowly allowed her hand to disconnect from his arm. Floating there was turning out to be more relaxing than scary.

Her eyes slid shut as her head tilted backwards. In the distance she could hear children playing, people laughing, birds chirping loudly. But they were irrelevant, and all she found herself caring about was the sound of the waves and his quiet presence. "It's so calm," she answered softly. The worries, they were being washed away and her lips curved happily. Slowly green eyes opened to regard him with a smile. "I don't feel scared at all."
