Passing the Time

Duggan: "You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs."
Romana: "If you made an omelette, I'd expect to find a pile of broken crockery, a cooker in flames and an unconscious chef!"

Romana was bored. The elation of being rescued was already starting to wear off (although when she realized this, she was astonished at how quickly she'd forgotten her previous solitary lifestyle in favour of the one she now had), her TARDIS was still going through the slow recharging process, and she'd already located a Gallifreyan harp from her Memory Room and tuned it...but the desire to actually play was not there. So she left the instrument in her room and wandered idly up to the library.

What I need, Romana thought to herself, is a real challenge. Something to apply my mind to, that will be distracting and yet productive. I like having a good challenge...

She'd been running her fingers over the various book spines as she wandered about the bookshelf-filled room. She didn't have any particular idea about what she wanted to read, or if she even wanted to read at all. It was just a different place to be, at the moment.

And then...she paused, and looked over at the books her fingers were touching. Cookbooks. For a variety of intergalactic cuisines, but it didn't surprise Romana that a majority of the books were for Earth dishes. Not only was Earth quite the home-away-from-home for The Doctor, but so many of his companions were from there, too. Romana lifted out a book describing 'Favourite Recipes of Provence', and opened it up...and realized that she had no idea what half of the instructions meant. The book didn't even contain a glossary of terms, either. With a feeling of consternation, Romana pulled out another cookbook, and then another. Wasn't there a single cooking instruction book that actually showed you how to do the cooking? That had been the problem with her attempt on the bread recipe...

After a time, Romana found just the sort of book she was looking for: not only did it spell out its cooking terms in clear, simple language, but it even had a picture glossary of what cooking equipment it asked for. The main reason why Romana hadn't looked in it before was that it was entitled, Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Cookbook. Romana had no idea who 'Mickey Mouse' was, but she felt extremely dubious about taking cooking advice from a rodent. However, the book was easy to understand...and these recipes certainly made more sense than the ones in the other books. Perhaps she should start easy, and work her way up to greater complexity.

With a newfound goal and with the cookbook in hand, Romana made her way once more to the TARDIS kitchen.
