Summary: Jensen is grateful for conventions...for reasons that involve Jared.
Author's Notes: Because of this video (3:17).

While conventions sometimes seem awkward and a little bit crazed, Jensen’s mostly grateful for them. It’s not even about the money. If he didn’t want to go to them, he just wouldn’t, regardless of the salary boost. He could say he’s grateful for the boost to his ego, but it’s more than that. Sure, there are some people who take things too far and sometimes speak out of turn, but the vast majority of them are just a part of this family and phenomenon that Jensen’s found himself woven into. He thinks it’s sometimes cheesy to say it, but when it comes down to it, it’s the truth.

It’s an experience, to have inside jokes and shared memories with hundreds of people who crowd into a room just to enjoy your work, banter, and antics with you. It’s an energy that Jensen can’t even really explain. And to top it all off, he gets to share it with people he’s grown closer to than he ever could have imagined; even people he was close to before Supernatural. Standing in front of a crowd in Rome with not only Jared and the others, but Jason and Steve as well? There was a moment when Jensen looked around and couldn’t really believe how lucky he was.

Of course, there are times when Jensen’s grateful for conventions for other reasons.

Jensen rests on the bed, ankles crossed over each other, thinking over the events of the day. He and Jared always come home with memories, still laughing over the wording of a question, a quip someone came up with on the spot, an impression that had the whole room in hysterics. But there’s one thing tonight that sticks in his mind, and he looks over at the open door of the bathroom when he hears the shower turn off, Jared exiting with a towel wrapped around his waist.

“You actually tryin’ to be modest?” Jensen asks, brow raised.

Jared smirks. “Fine.” He pulls the towel off and tosses it aside. “All this time, I thought you might like me better if I was more civilized, but apparently not.”

“Apparently,” Jensen agrees, smiling as Jared flops down onto the bed with him, hair still wet and clinging to his skin. He looks over at Jared, his smile going a little soft, the way it only does at times like this, when he’s alone with Jared in their bedroom. “You deserved it, you know.”

Jared turns to him, puzzled. “What? Not being civilized?”

“No.” Jensen rolls his eyes and stretches, hands resting behind his head. “What happened today. That whole speech about the journey you’ve taken with Sam? I know we kinda made a joke out of it, but you deserved it.”

“Oh, man, come on,” Jared scoffs, looking away.

“I’m serious,” Jensen says, undeterred. He knew Jared would fight off the compliment. “You deserved the credit.”

Jared looks over at him, a little hesitant, but he finally says, “Thanks.”

Jensen uncrosses his legs and nudges Jared’s shin with his foot. “You’re welcome.”

He means it, because he knows how much shit Jared gets, how much he takes. Whether it’s on set or in the media, he knows how things generally go. It’s mostly in good humor, joking about Jared working less, never being on time, and just being the resident goofball. But while Jensen hasn’t looked at the rest of it himself, he knows that it gets skewed. He doesn’t like it, and he wouldn’t want to admit it, but he knows the favoritism generally moves in his direction, and that Jared gets insulted more often than praised. It’s what comes with playing a somewhat controversial character and with being such an open person. It’s why Jared’s closed up a little more in recent years, and Jensen knows it.

That’s why he tries to boost Jared’s confidence whenever he can, and not just out of pity. He tells Jared when he does a good job, because Jared does a good job. He pushes Jared to give everything his all, and he tries his best to shine a light on Jared’s talents whenever he can.

So the speech today about how great of a job Jared’s done with Sam? Jensen may have had a laugh about it with Misha, may have played it up on stage. But he was actually relieved and happy to hear it. Part of him actually thought finally, someone else is telling him. And when he walked off stage with Misha, part of the reason was to let Jared have that bit of a moment to himself; to enjoy the fact that a roomful of people believed in him.

“To tell you the truth,” Jensen says, breaking the calm silence that had settled over the bedroom, “I almost feel bad for making a joke out of it all.” He waits for a beat and then says, “Almost.”

Jared snickers and smacks him on the arm. “Such an awesome friend.”

“Oh, so I’m just a friend now?” Jensen teases, pretending to be hurt.

Jared just laughs and rolls towards Jensen, kissing him softly on the lips. “Shut up.”
