Summary: I just really wanted to write something like this ever since seeing this picture. Happy boys after Conan.

“You gonna frame it?”

Jensen looks from his phone to Jared, who’s smiling fondly at him, head turned towards him on his pillow. He smiles back, looking at the picture again and shifting a little closer to Jared under the sheets, until he can feel the warmth between their bodies.

“I just might. I think it’s my new favorite picture of us.”

Jared pushes over a little, head tilting so that it touches Jensen’s shoulder as he looks up at Jensen’s phone with him. “Why’s that?”

“That smile,” Jensen answers, staring at the Jared in the picture again. He shrugs a little on the bed. “I don’t know, it’s just one of those smiles, like…I can see it in your eyes. I like it when you’re that happy. Maybe content is the right word. Either way, I like it.”

Jared rolls into Jensen a little, kissing his neck and smoothing an arm over his waist. “You did that,” he says, the two of them still looking at the picture together. “You surprised me.”

“I know.” Jensen drops the phone down to his chest and shifts them both so he can get an arm around Jared, holding him there. “I might just like that I can do that for you.”

Jared laughs against him, warm puff of air on Jensen’s skin. “I mean, I was excited about the show, too, you know.”

“Yeah, but come on.” Jensen nudges him with a knee, jostles him a little with the arm he has around his body. “The birthday surprise made it.”

“What made you think of it?” Jared asks, thumb moving back and forth where it sits on Jensen’s abs, and Jensen doesn’t stop him, even when it tickles a little. “I mean, after all this time. And you didn’t have to do anything, you know that? I would’ve been happy just doing the show with you and hanging out after. But you…”

He trails off, and Jensen knows that’s a sign that Jared truly appreciated the gesture. There isn’t much that renders Jared speechless.

“It was just a keg,” Jensen says, shrugging again. But he knows it was a little more than that. He knows it was the first keg from his brewery, specifically for Jared. He knows it was driven out a long distance, specifically for Jared. He knows it was for a birthday surprise on a national television show they were finally asked to be a part of, on Jared’s birthday, of all days. He knows it’s a surprise he managed to pull off after all these years; that they have become content with the simpler things, which is fine, but that it’s good to still have a reminder of how much they mean to each other every now and then. “I wanted you to have it. And I don’t know…go big or go home?” Jared snorts against him. “It was just kind of a perfect opportunity to do something special. So much of this trip is all about Comic Con. I didn’t want your birthday to get lost in that.”

So, he’d done the opposite. He’d made the effort to work things out with the show and bring in the keg. He’d made Jared’s birthday the main event on national television, even if it made Jared nervous to bring up their past tradition. Overall, it was still positive and had still paid off, Jared now getting both arms around him and hugging him, tight.

“Did you worry we’d get in trouble?” Jared asks, and Jensen smiles, tilting his head against Jared’s.

“No.” Maybe it’s stupid, or arrogant, or both, but it’s true. “Not after all this time. We’ve done our jobs, Jay. Well enough that we’ve made it this far and are actually spending the whole week here, this time. I think we’ll be okay. I think they still trust us enough. And to be completely honest, I’m not sure I really cared, even if we did. I just really wanted to do it, and it was too good to pass up.”

“Thanks for being the brave one,” Jared says, his grip loosening a little as they both relax a bit more, winding down from the day. “And thank you for…everything.”

“You’re brave, too,” Jensen reminds him, will always remind him, as he closes his eyes, not even caring that the phone is still laying on his chest. “And you’re welcome.”

“Just one thing,” Jared says, and Jensen opens his eyes again, waiting.

“What?”

Jared pokes him in the abs then, and Jensen startles and laughs. “I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that you were actually able to lie to me.”

It’s still playful, the smile evident in Jared’s voice, and Jensen grins. “It wasn’t lying. I didn’t lie to you. It’s not like you said, ‘Hey, Jensen, are you planning a big birthday surprise for me on the Conan show?’ and I said, ‘No!’” Jared pokes him again. “I just kept it a secret.”

“Yeah, well. You’re usually pretty bad at that.”

It’s true. Neither of them is good at keeping things from the other. They never have been. It’s part of why they’re so close. They know literally everything there is to know about each other, and it hasn’t scared either of them off.

“I still am,” Jensen says, reassuring. “But this one was a little bit easier, because I knew I’d end up with you smiling the way you did in that picture.”

“What if I didn’t?” Jared asks, tone still playful. “What if I hated it?”

“Then I would have been absolutely fucking mortified.” Jared laughs, and Jensen jostles him again. “I’m serious. I honestly don’t even know what I would have done to make it up to you.”

“Luckily, you don’t have to.”

“Luckily.” Comfortable silence falls between them, the very feeling of contentment Jensen sensed in Jared from that picture. He closes his eyes again, but doesn’t fall asleep yet. “I promise to only ever keep happy surprises from you, and nothing else.”

“I know.” Jared gives him another quick squeeze. “Me too.”
