Okay uh

hi CnC

I have a question concerning this character, who I would very much like to app. The problem is that he's kind of a gray area when it comes to the rules about AUs, or rather, he WAS, until a recent canon update. Now he is... less gray... more orange? I WILL EXPLAIN.

In the Homestuck universe, there are creatures called Sprites. These are game constructs that exist to give advice and help players out. They get prototyped twice (usually) - once with an object of some sort, and once with something dead. This determines the personality and powers of the sprite.

Davesprite was prototyped from a doomed alternate future clone of Dave Strider, and a dead crow. Technically, he has all the memories of Dave Strider, plus an ambiguous amount of time spent running around a grimdark dead future where John and Jade are both dead (It's at least four months and might have been as long as a year; canon isn't terribly clear on that)

Now, one could argue that this is just an alternate universe Dave, and thus not appable, except for three things which I think justify him in the game.

1. He interacts directly with Dave. As far as I'm able to tell, the BIGGEST reason for this rule is to prevent characters from going OMG WHY IS THERE ANOTHER ME!? >( and freaking out. Dave, on the other hand, would be more like “oh it's my sprite k”. There are (many) (instances) of them interacting and hanging out in canon.

2. Davesprite isn't dead. “But Teal, wtf does that even mean???” I shall explain! One of the mechanics of Sburb, the universe ending/creating game that the kids in Homestuck play, is time travel. One of the interesting things about this time travel is that no two copies of the same person can actually exist at the same time - all time loops must be stable. Thus, there could be five Daves standing around... but they all have to be the same Dave. That is, when one Dave gets to a certain point in time, he has to go back in time and become the second Dave, then go back and become the third, and the fourth, and so on, until he's the fifth Dave and watches the other four loop back in time. Complicated, but sensical in the end. If any of those Daves were to take an action to render him split from the timeline - that is, an alternate universe Dave - he would drop dead at an unspecified point in the future, often in a horrific and bloody way. This happens twice to Dave in canon - once when he tries to go back in time to stop a thief from stealing Rose's journal, and once when Terezi tricks him into splitting his timeline to prove to him that he's too afraid of death to reach the God Tiers. Both these alternate universe Daves die in short order.

Davesprite, however, has ample opportunity to die, and in fact for quite a while was presumed dead in canon. He faced down Jack Noir, a being shown to be capable of killing some of the most powerful characters in Homestuck, of destroying entire planets without remorse. But Davesprite somehow survives, despite his older brother dying. He is wounded horribly, but goes on to start cleaning up the ends of the Alpha Dave's sidequests. Since he didn't die when he had every reason to, it's pretty clear that he's not in fact Dave, but considered by Sburb to be a unique entity in himself, and thus “safe” from the dead timeline rule.

3. During the canon update which reavealed that Davesprite was alive, he specifically says, “I'm not the real Dave anymore.” Earlier in canon he insisted that he was totally the real Dave and in fact more real than the real Dave; this shows some character development as he's accepted the fact that he's not actually Dave at all, but a new and unique entity.

In terms of his personality, he is also distinct; the distinction is subtle, but it is there. Davesprite is far less ironic and sarcastic than Dave, preferring to be more direct and to the point. He doesn't mess around, and has a drive to get things done, due to the four months+ he has in maturity on the other Dave and his status has on the other Dave.

So basically I'm asking - given these considerations, especially what with Dave and Davesprite interacting in canon, would he be appable? As a further consideration, I'd think of Dave and Davesprite as more similar to Riku and the Riku Replica from Kingdom Hearts - the Replica has Riku's memories and even at one point believed himself to be Riku, but is not in fact Riku, has a different personality, and is treated as a unique character.
