Treno stood as a slight surprise to Vayne, who had not been forewarned that the town was eternally plunged into night. An unusual phenomenon to be sure. He had, however, been adequately informed to keep close watch on his purse, as there were thieves thicker than the night there. Now he fully understood the reference. He had been in the city a little under five minutes when one such undesirable made an attempt at his pockets. The ruthless emperor had the man by the throat, crushing his windpipes in the matter of seconds. He allowed him to leave, to leave word to anyone else. If they possessed a modicum of intelligence, they would keep their distance.
Directions leading to the tower were simple enough to follow, and it easily came into view. He had been assured that Dr. Tot was a source of knowledge far beyond anything discernable through years of reading. As he lifted his hand to rap on the door with his knuckles, he found himself hoping this would be a profitable visit.
