Characters: Rydia (wandering into Ceodore, then Kain) Progress: On-going Summary: In-progress Location: Troia, around the castle and town Date: October, 1804 Warnings: Nah
Kain was seated right near the large window and staring out, a place he so often was lately. Despite it being a somewhat cool fall day, that window was currently wide open. At the moment, Zephyr was out getting some much needed flight and Kain was watching her as she soared gracefully through the air.
He glanced over on hearing Rydia. Mostly, he still wondered why she would want anything to do with him right now. "If you want..."
Of course she wanted, why else would she be there? But Rydia bit back such a response. Kain was in low spirits and understandably so. What he had prized most, aside from that dragon, had been taken from him. She slipped inside and closed the door behind her, heading over to the window. For a moment, she didn't say anything, just watched Zephyr. A small smile formed. "She seems to be enjoying herself here again."
Kain stared out, eying the sky with undisguised longing, and watching Zephyr as she soared farther away, chasing after a flock of small birds. "She loves a chance to stretch her wings, and to hunt..." He at least seemed more at ease when he was talking about his dragony child.
Rydia watched for a moment longer, then her gaze slid back to him. "I would have taken her, but...it seemed best to leave her in the hands of one who knew what he was doing." Caring for the young dragon would certainly have been a handful, and Rydia felt far too inexperienced in such ways to be of any help.
Kain kept his focus on the dragon. She was some distance away, but he could see her catch up and chomp down on one of the birds. She'd become an expert at the smaller prey like that.
"It's all right, Rydia... Reis did well with her while I was- in my absence. It was good for her to spend time with another dragon to guide her, and... Edgar as well." He wasn't sure how he felt toward the king of Figaro, but had to admit that he'd been generous in allowing the young one to stay. "The first few days we were here, she refused to leave me. I'm... glad to see her taking to the sky once more, as she should be."
"It's a good sign." But Rydia's mind was beginning to slip away from the subject of the dragon. Something else nagged at her, and she needed answers before more time had passed. "Kain, I...I saw your video. Zeromus is truly around?"
Kain nodded, expression instantly becoming troubled as it always did when the subject of the Lucavi came up. "Not yet, but... there's a very real possibility of it happening should the Cancer Stone fall into the wrong hands. We have to find that stone and see that it's guarded heavily..." Kain had dealt with enough by being possessed recently, but to have the one behind his brainwashing back home also appear... it would break him beyond repair.
"Cancer Stone? That's my sign...." Rydia's gaze grew troubled, but of course she knew by now the danger of the stones. There was no way she would want to claim the artifact, of course. After seeing what it did to Kain, the summoner was taking no chances with her own fate. "Hm...is he any different as a Lucavi?"
Kain glanced at her and then away to Zephyr again. "I wouldn't be too concerned. You're too pure for their possession abilities to work." It was irritating to him that out of all his allies from home he remained the only one tainted with so much darkness.
He folded his arms and considered the Lucavi-memories of Zeromus versus his own. "They call him Zeromus the Condemner... and he's still a being of absolute hatred. He makes considerable use of Gravity-based powers. And Big Bang... he still uses that as a primary attack, and it's as powerful as ever."
That provoked a shudder and look of disgust. Rydia remembered the fight with Zeromus very well, and especially that attack. It had nearly killed the entire party; the summoner was very much not looking forward to a repeat performance. "...wonderful. We barely survived that last time, and without the Elder and the other here to bring us back...."
Well. The Iifa Tree could, maybe, but there was never a guarantee, and Rydia didn't want to be the next to become paralyzed. She sighed deeply. "I'm not even sure where to begin looking for that, but he's our responsibility, Lucavi or not."
"I know, Rydia. That's what troubles me as well... I don't know if we would fare as well against him without them..." Not to mention, he was terrified of somehow being controlled again. If Zeromus showed up, there was nothing stopping him from taking over a former pawn of his. Even in Golbez's absence...
Kain shuddered but when he looked at Rydia his expression was determined. "But if he does emerge, we'll fight and defeat him. We have to."
"...we'll need the Crystal again, won't we? Or the equivalent. I haven't heard about it appearing in Gaia, though." The Crystal had been key to removing Zeromus' invincibility, at least in their world. What if his Lucavi form necessitated the same? If so, if they couldn't find the Crystal in time...Rydia tried to squash down that sense of horror, but it wasn't easy.
Kain thought some more. "As a Lucavi... he may not have the same reaction. But I think we'd still best prepare for that to be possible, and to keep an eye out for it. I don't recall that the Lucavi forms have such vulnerability to Crystals in general..." He shook his head. "Yet they can't be underestimated. You saw what... what Cúchulainn did in only a short span of time, imagine more of them, banding together for even longer..."
That image provoked a shudder; no, she didn't want to imagine such havoc. "If they aren't vulnerable to Crystals, are they vulnerable to anything? Is there no advantage that we might have over them?" Rydia knew Kain's knowledge of those creatures was the most thorough that any of them had, but she struggled with the idea that there was nothing that could weaken them. Every creature had a weakness, didn't they?
Kain frowned deeply. "Each of them has their own weaknesses and strengths... it will really depend upon which ones arise. Famfrit, for instance, has a connection to the element of water. They all... can be fought and killed, but it'll take a group effort. No one should attempt to handle them alone." Not even Kain was quite insane enough to take one on by himself, not after experiencing their power firsthand. He was not about to be counted out of any battle against them, however, although he refrained from informing Rydia of those intentions.
That was probably wise, given Rydia's predictable reaction. As it was, she gave a conceding nod to Kain's bout of common sense. "I agree. I hate saying it, but it was pretty obvious, back in Lindblum."
Her disturbed expression didn't ease up as another thought came to mind. "Do you know if there's any way to save the people possessed? Can the demons be killed without destroying the host?
He glanced over on hearing Rydia. Mostly, he still wondered why she would want anything to do with him right now. "If you want..."
