After hearing from Rydia that Eiko had sneaked off with the other children, Tifa immediately caught the next flight to Lindblum. She had some sympathy for Eiko, because she knew why she had done it. The little girl was lonely and missing her friends. But really, did Eiko have no concept of asking her friends over to play? They'd left Tifa almost frantic as she ran through the most horrific possibilities in her head: Kefka had kidnapped them, a monster had eaten them, some evil force had taken Denzel, Marlene and Shelke away from their family forever...
It was such a relief to find out that the truth was relatively harmless - but it created other mixed feelings too. Upon entering Lindblum Grand Castle, Tifa was stopped by one of the guards and taken to Regent Cid. He apologised for Eiko's behaviour and promised to do his best to make sure nothing like it happened again (though, by the weary look in his eyes, Tifa suspected he thought this would be a losing battle).
Tifa could think of quite a few things she'd like to say to him about being a better parent. But she didn't, partly out of politeness, as Regent Cid had been so helpful to her in the past, and partly because she felt guilty of the same offence herself. How could she lecture others on parenting when she had completely failed to notice all three of her children leaving the house? More than that, she had clearly failed to instil in them the sense not to be led astray by children like Eiko.
These doubts nagged at her as she ascended the staircase, following the Lindblum guard to find the children. They were at the very top of the castle, out on the battlements in the open air. Tifa spotted Eiko's distinctive blue hair first, by the telescope, and her heart fluttered as she saw Denzel, Marlene and Shelke with her. They were so near the edge, and it was such a long way down...
Swallowing her trepidation, Tifa quickened her pace. "There you are," she said, her voice full of warm relief. "You had us all in such a panic - oh, I'm so glad to see you!"
And she held out her arms to sweep the children into a hug. Lessons could be learned later. For now, she was simply grateful to see them again.
