Jack had fiddled his security system to a standstill. There simply was no more fiddling to be done to it ( Read more... )

After her weird encounter with Jack Sparrow earlier in the day, Tosh had disappeared down in the Lair where it was quiet and devoid of pirates. There wasn't, unfortunately, enough to really keep her busy for very long, though, and so she eventually made her way back upstairs.

Curiosity drew her out to see what Jack was working on, as well as a desire to spend a little time with him -- she had come to Milieux partly because she missed being around him, after all -- and she hovered quietly nearby and watched.

"You know that's a good way to get shot," Jack said, though there was no heat in his tone and he didn't look up from where he carefully handled the cartridge in his hand.

"If it wasn't you, it might be," Tosh agreed. "But I knew you'd know I was here."

She had a cup of coffee in each hand, from a fresh pot Ianto had just made, and she walked over to set one on the table where Jack could reach it. "Do you have a minute?"

Ooo coffee!

Setting aside the cartridge, Jack reached for the mug, pale eyes peering up at her from beneath long lashes.

"Always," he said, nodding towards the bench on the other side of the tables. "What's up?"

Tosh sat down on the bench and held her coffee mug in both hands, eyes on the gun pieces laid out in front of Jack.

"Dean suggested yesterday that there might be some need for a tech here in your Milieux operation," she began. "I got the idea that Ianto must be handling your tracking and data analysis, and it seems like the Rift is extremely active here, and I know you have weevils, and of course there's that weather project..."

"And you're tired of dealing with Owen and Gwen making calf eyes at each other?" Jack was willing to hazard a guess from overtop the rim of his coffee.

Tosh laughed softly at Jack's remark, and looked up. "Well, a little, yes. It can get overwhelming, especially when it's just the three of us."

Which Gwen and Owen tended to treat as just the two of them. "And I'm getting bored there, Jack. There isn't enough to do, the Rift has been quiet, the weevils have been quiet, and Owen doesn't have the nose for trouble that you have. I'd like a little...excitement, I guess. A little time away from Cardiff."

Picking the shot gun shell back up, Jack idly spun it through his fingers.

"Basically, you want to relocate here on a longer term basis?"

"I know it wouldn't really be a full-time job, but yes, I'd like to do that. I could keep myself busy, and you know things would get done a lot more efficiently with me here instead of Cardiff." Tosh shot him a little hopeful grin. "And what happens if you get locked in with a power shutdown?"

Jack shot her a look that said reminding him of those particular incidents was not a good way to get him to grant favors.

Still...

Twirling the shell a couple more times in his fingers, Jack nodded.

"All right."

Tosh grimaced and bit her lip, making a mental note to tread more carefully in future.

Then he agreed to her request, and she smiled at him. "Thank you, Jack! You'll be glad, I promise." On impulse, she stretched across the table, very careful not to get into his way or disturb anything, and kissed his cheek. Then sat quickly back down and picked up her coffee again.

"Uh huh," Jack said but in a teasing tone and he gave Tosh a wink before turning his attention back on the shell casing in his hand.

Tosh smiled in reply to the wink, and watched Jack work for a few minutes, sipping at her coffee and thinking about the events of her time in Milieux so far.

"The people here seem nice," she remarked. "I've met a few, Ianto kicked me out of the house the other day so I couldn't avoid it. I am being careful about what I say to people, though. Just playing the part of a computer geek."

"Ianto is wise in the ways of making sure you don't hide away," Jack said eyes fixed on the shell he was currently emptying buckshot out of. "And all I can ask is you be careful, Tosh. Things have a way of making their way onto the news around here."

"Yeah, Dean warned me about that," Tosh replied, growing serious for a moment. "No CCTV, but somehow they still manage to pick up everything that happens. It's eerie."

She was watching Jack's hands as she talked, enjoying the skilled way they moved and thinking about the discussion she and Dean had about lockpicking. "I've made sure that everyone thinks I'm just visiting friends, and that I have some kind of boring computer technician job back home."

"Eerie is a good description for this place," Jack said with a chuckle. With deftness that seemed somehow out of place with hands so large, Jack changed out the buckshot for rock salt without spilling a single grain.

Caping the end of the shell, he balanced it on the side of his index finger, studying it thoughtfully.

"You might consider getting a job here in town, if you want, Tosh. Truly, things aren't as exciting as maybe it seems over here and I know that when you're bored you do things ... like hack NASA."
