It really was quite peaceful out here. Julian soon became wrapped up in his own thoughts. “Bored yet?” The voice snapped him out of his reverie, and Julian found himself face to face with one of the inmates. Where he had come from, Julian couldn’t have said, for there was no cover to be seen, save for the asylum in the distance.
Regaining his composure, Julian asked, “Who are you?”
The man shrugged, eyes looking sideways. “What’s in a name? Just another title to categorize a man by.” Most inmates came from the lower class, and it reflected in their accents, almost indiscernible to the human ear sometimes. But this accent was cultured and refined, the mark of the upper class. There was something annoyingly familiar about his face, but Julian couldn’t place it.
“A bit far from your normal parties and harem of women, aren’t you?” The question was so blunt and abrupt that the young lord was left speechless, the words drying up in his mouth.
Keller turned away, hoping the inmate would leave if he simply ignored the madman. Alas, it appeared that was not to be. But there was something that drew him to stay. That accent, the high-bred features, even the way he carried himself. It was the mark of a gentleman. From riches to rags, it seemed.
The arrogance bled into a sneering tone. “What would one of the dregs of humanity know about high society?”
Shoulders rose up and down in a brief shrug, the face suddenly turning melancholy. “Alas, very little. Daughters of the rich and wealthy who break down at least get the excuse of being sent away ‘for the sake of their delicate health.’ Sons are just….forgotten.”
Julian finally placed the sad green eyes. Marcus Nicodemus Martinez, son of Raymond Gabriel Martinez, a Spanish lord who had escaped the turmoil of his native country, securing a place in the high society by marrying into the family of a wealthy Englishwoman. He had run in the same circles as Julian, and was known for being a bit of a bohemian. It was rumored he and the Spanish ambassador’s son were a little more than just good friends. The rumors had turned into outright scandal during one of the parties held by Lady Frost, when the two went off into the woods together and did not return until the next morning. The resulting fallout had been the talk of the town for a while, until the wagging tongues moved onto more recent subjects. No one had even bothered to wonder what had happened to the young noble in question. It was already a given what had happened, the only way for a family to regain any sense of honor. One was simply erased by their family, never spoken of again. But to be sent here…. Julian couldn’t believe a family would be so heartless.
The eyes didn’t look so much at Julian as through him. “Be careful. One day you may look in the mirror and find the eyes of a madman staring back through that mask you wear so carefully.”
Whether it was the gaze or the words that unnerved the young noble more, he couldn’t say. Blue eyes tore away from the melancholy shadow before him. He murmured, “I must go.” It took all his self control not to break into a run back up to the asylum. He could feel the other’s gaze on him, but when he turned back around, the inmate was gone, silent as he had come. Julian resolved to leave this place posthaste.
