http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2011/04/ktru_says_goodbye_to_917_fm.php Ah, my beloved KTRU, 91.7FM. Rice Radio. I will miss you.
I remember when I first found you, about 20-25 years ago. Late, late at night, I finally had control of the radio. And what did I find? KTRU. I believe it was a show called Clubhouse. I discovered the other side of Lou Reed. I discovered "I might like you better if we slept together." I discovered there was an alternative in music, and I realized we had a local music scene. Somewhere, I still have a cassette tape of music I recorded off that station in the wee early morning hours.
I spent many nights alone with that radio station.
KTRU was created and run by students at Rice University. University of Houston bought the transmitter and station from Rice so that they could run a 24-hour classical station. I don't believe the Rice really had a right to sell it. I don't know why UH (my alma mater) paid so much, nor do I understand why UH needs another radio station - their stations aren't even run by the students.
KTRU will continue on HD radio, thanks to our local Pacifica Radio station, KPRT, and they will also continue online. Unfortunately for me, I don't have an HD transmitter, and online radio is banned from our work computers.
Tomorrow, I'll break the dress code at work and wear my SAVE KTRU t-shirt.
BTW - if you like the blues, check out KTRU's "Blues in Hi-Fi." One of the best blues programs around.
