"Mommy, can you tell me a story?" It was a normal evening with Janie and Lynn finishing up a game of Mancala. Lynn hated the way her mother always beat her and wanted to stop the game.
"Yes. I'll tell you another of my Grandma's stories about Nzambi."
"I want a real fairy tale." The little girl pouted, which always seemed to help her get her way. Mommy wanted to tell her stories from Nigeria, about animals that were mean to each other, or talking mountains that ate bad children. She wanted to hear something that might be a cartoon movie one day.
"Do you want to hear one about a princess?"
"Yeah!"
"Once, there was a very vain prince who thought no woman was beautiful enough for him."
"Mo-om. I want a story about a princess." Janie sighed when Lynn said that. She wasn't a very patient child.
"This is about a princess, alright?
Once upon a time, there was a great and powerful queen, who only had one daughter. She gave into her child's every desire, resulting in a very spoiled but very beautiful princess. Every person in the kingdom was ordered to obey her commands. If they did not, the punishment would be very severe." Lynn yawned loudly, then sighed. The story sound long, and like it would have a lesson.
"Can we watch a movie? And play a game? And do makeovers?"
"We can watch a movie about a princess. I have something to do after that."
"What is it?"
"I need to fix something."
"Can we play after you do that?"
"Yes." Janie smiled at her daughter and hugged her tightly. Lynn squirmed a bit, but Janie continued holding her. After a kiss on the cheek, she finally started the movie, settling against the couch, her arm around her daughter. Slowly her eyes closed.
"Mommy? Mommy? Wake up." She didn't stir. The younger girl noted her deep breathing and threw a Disney princess blanket over her, then went back to watching the movie.
