Author's Notes: Weeks after the Doctor and Rose had the Reinette incident, the Doctor has to face how he feels about Rose, and make a decision. The consequence will change everything in their relationship.
“You love her still, don’t you? Well, you know what, now it is too late. If there is one thing true about Rose is that she is stubborn. And she wants to forget you."
The much awaited second chapter, well, much awaited at least by my opinion, of the story about the Doctor's choices, and their consequences. And how he learnt that he did in fact care for someone much more than what he had previously thought was possible.
“Hey,” was her only greeting for the Doctor. She stood in the hallway with a simple ensemble of a pink Pink Floyd Tee that the Doctor had given her, and a pair of old jeans that she had not been able to wear for four years. She looked tired, and emaciated. The Doctor had noted all of these details, he even had noted the small under eye bags that Rose was beginning to get, and it made him feel a bit guilty.
“Hey,” was his response to her greeting, and Rose noticed his demeanour. He was wearing his brown and white pinstripe suit with a white shirt underneath, and his converse. He looked like he hadn’t slept in a million years, and the truth was that he normally didn’t sleep, so this was a surprise for the Doctor. He just looked plainly tired.
“You look like shit.”
“Hey, no bad words here, Misses,” the Doctor said as he pointed at her and tried to make her smile, but he failed miserably.
“Okay, Dad,” she said, as she sat on the bench in front of the console.
“Oi! Because I can be your grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-father,” he had to stop before finishing to breathe, “ does not mean that you can disrespect me by calling me your father, anyway, I am young-at-heart.” He winked and stood in front of her.
“I wasn’t trying to make fun of you, I was making a point,” she said, as she frowned at him, and looked serious.
He noticed the slight, no, the vast, enormous, gargentious (is that even a word?) similarities between Rose and Jackie in that moment, and he fell silent for a second. He turned around and went to the monitor screen and then looked at Rose, “Where to?”
“Someplace nice. Although you keep taking me to Cardiff or some strange vessels for oil and such.”
“I can try to get you somewhere different, maybe the Tardis will oblige, maybe not, but all I can do is try my very best. What do you say Rosie?"
She just nodded and rolled her eyes.
Minutes seemed to pass in silence as he tried to make the ship go to his chosen destination, but it landed them with a major thud in a place unfamiliar to the Doctor because of the sheer fact that his computer screen decided to turn off.
He looked at Rose who was sitting down looking at her toes and frowned.
“Well, want to guess where we are at?” he asked as he smiled at Rose, trying to make himself feel a bit brighter.
“No, and really, I don’t care.”
“Rose, what’s wrong?” he asked her as she stood and walked to the door, and walked out.
She never even looked back at him. That made him even more furious, but if there was one thing the Doctor knew how to do well, it was hide his fury underneath all the layers of history and sorrow and hate. He hid them all so well, that most of the time made him forget about them. But for some reason, he felt odd about Rose, he felt that maybe he shouldn’t have let her on, that maybe he should have told her once he regenerated that he cared for her only as a friend, that he did not love her like his previous self did, that he wanted her to be with him as a friend, hoping nothing more would ever happen. Stupid, stupid TimeLord.
Mickey had just entered the room when he caught the Doctor sitting in the captain’s chair stairing at the ceiling.
“Did you talk to her?” asked Mickey as he looked at the Doctor and folded his arms in front of his chest.
“Nope,” and he popped the p as he said the word with conviction.
“Coward,” Mickey stated back as he looked at the TimeLord and noticed how very human he could be.
“Not me,” the Doctor turned to face Mickey and looked at him squarely in the eyes, “She left the ship, she is somewhere out there.”
Mickey looked terrified, as though the Doctor had just thrown Rose out of the ship in a supernova.
“What!!! If she gets killed I am so going to kill you, you stupid TimeLord!!!” Mickey pointed at the Doctor as the Doctor rolled his eyes.
“It is just Cardiff, it always has been since the Madame de Pompadour,” he stated as he went over to the door and opened it. "Look here see."
“Well, you never know, some Slithingy might want to kill Rose,” Mickey looked at the Doctor then and just shook his head, “You know, for all you call humans apes, sometimes you make me wonder about yourself. You seem to love Rose one day, then, the next you dislike her and then, you like her again but because you are like a thousand years old you probably feel like you are rocking the cradle so you just don’t want to, then you don’t care. I just think that you have been sending strange signals, and if you really do care for her you would just stop..."
“So what should I stop, travelling with her? Or what” asked the Doctor in a mocking tone.
“Flirting with her.” Mickey frowned at the Doctor then and opened the door again. He stepped out of the Tardis without a word.
“Oh great! Now I lost both of you!!” he stood in front of the door. But he could not step out, some strange pain in his stomach forced him to stay right there staring out the door for ten solid minutes, until he just closed it again, and just looked at the back of the door. Not thinking of much.
One hour passed.
Two hours.
Three.
The Doctor was becoming rather anxious as the time passed. He walked around the console room, upset that the ship in this moment decided not to break anything. He looked inside the floor grates, to the walls, and then, he looked at the hinges in the door hoping that maybe his sight might have some sonic powers inorder to break something. Everything he tried failed.
Five hours passed and the Doctor was still in the console room. He was just sitting down in the floor, looking at the ceiling when he heard the door open.
“Hi!” a female voice woke him up from his daydreams of Gallifrey and Susan. He looked at Rose. She was a bit different. She wore a smile, and her lips were a bit swollen. She was a bit tipsy too.
“Hi,” he stated as he smiled at her, and tried to fake happiness.
“Can I ask you a favor?” Rose said as she coyly sat next to the Doctor and smiled at him in a flirtatious manner that always worked on the Doctor.
“What is it”
“Can Bob travel with us?”
“And who is Bob?”
“My boyfriend.”
“What about Mickey?” The Doctor stood up quicker than lightning as he heard the mention of Bob as Rose’s boyfriend. She was out for no more than six hours and now she had a boyfriend. The Doctor was bewildered at Earthlings and their sexuality.
“Mickey, nah, we’ve been friends for months, jeez, Doctor I thought you would have noticed that.”
“Well, I am sorry but Bob your new beau can not travel with us.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t know him. For all we know I may invite Jeffrey Dahmer onboard and mind you, his planet banned him for being completely nuts, but look how many he murdered, or even a Slitheen. Just because you snug someone, doesn’t mean you know them.”
“Oi!! And what about Reinette?”
“That is different!” he realized that the conversation was going to a very dark area. He spun toward the hall, but turned around when she growled.
“Really? You knew that she was a courtesan, what if she was sick or something? You never know if she gave you Syphilis or Gonorrhoea or something.”
“I will have you know that she did not have any of that, records show that she was pretty healthy.” He was about to just turn around and leave again, when Rose went to the jugular.
“And you never slept with her? Oh, so now you are stating it as though it was technical information, when you probably had a lot of fun with her at the expense of me. Well, I have you know, that I for one, will not sit five and a half hours and think that that does not mean something. I like Bob, I want to have some time with Bob, and if you would have invited Reinette back to show the stars or whatever- then, that makes it fair that I can get a lover with me!!!” Rose stomped on the floor and looked at him, like a child, and that made him feel that she was over reacting. He remembered Reinette, how he promised her to show her the stars, he wanted to be with her for sometime, to get to know the one woman that infatuated the heart of the King. Rose, she was a child, a simple girl that had to grow up so much, and she had so much potential, but she still had to grow up.
“Never.”
“You alien, what, so you don’t fuck! You don’t consummate a relationship? Hard to believe. The way you looked at Reinette, and the way you looked after you knew she had died,” she tried to cry, to just let a simple tear fall down from her eyes, and she frowned, “I wish you would look at me that way,” she whispered.
“Rose,” he began to say, as he heard what he thought were her feelings for him, being stated by her, “We can’t.”
“No. you can’t, cause you don’t love me,” she stated, as she looked at him and shook her head, “You, you changed so much. You stated that it was only your features that had changed, but it isn’t true.”
“Rose-” he began to say as he noticed her frown lines, and her furrowed brows, and her simple tears betraying her.
“No, no, listen to me,” she said, as she pointed at him, and walked closer to him, “You used to love me. I saw it in your eyes, and your words. I always knew. Once you changed, it was like another man became you, with your former memories, but everything else was and is different. And what I hate about you, is that I still fell in love with the new you, and I know that you just think of me as a pet.”
“Rose I would never,” he whispered to her, as his own thoughts were being shushed by her words.
“You would never? Then why did you leave me and Mickey alone on that ship? You could have sent me to rescue Reinette, and then you could have gone to the era and picked me up, but no, you the only one that can drive this ship were trapped in France. You know, for all I envy Reinette, I had to admit that she was truly smart keeping the fireplace, because if not, I would right now be dead.”
The word took all the oxygen out of the Doctor’s lungs. He had never felt so guilty . Gallifrey had to be burnt for the greater good of the universe yes, but Rose, he had left her behind. He had forgotten that he was entrusted with Rose’s care, and he had failed her miserably in that one day.
“How can I say to you how much I know I made a mistake.” He whispered to her as he took her hands.
“No, you can’t. I am so sorry, but you did it. You broke my heart that day Doctor, and the pieces are shattered everywhere in the Tardis.. I don’t know if I will ever be able to heal from this And the jealousy and such was not all I felt, it was the fear of being alone, of being left behind to starve to death.”
She looked at him then, and smiled a bit, pitying her place.
“I need to be alone. I am going to get my things, and I am going to leave for a while. I need to live on my own, to learn how to deal without you.”
“Rose- Rose, you are making a mistake.” He took her shoulders and tried to hold her strongly.
“Mickey is on his way, we talked for a few minutes about this. I am going to live in Cardiff, you can visit if you like, but I know you don’t do that. He will stay with you.”
“Rose. Please don’t do this.”
“No, we have to. I need time to think and put somethings behind me, and you need to think about what you want Doctor. And you might want to go and get Reinette.”
He did not know what to say, he knew that she wanted him to forget her, and the same for her. And a small part of the Doctor’s mind was trying to tell him to try to stop her, but he knew he couldn’t.
She left his grip in that moment, and within thirty minutes they were once again together outside the Tardis. Rose smiling at him with tears filling her eyes, and the Doctor trying to look like he was not so affected.
“Well, see yah,” she said, as she hugged him, and looked away with her bag and walked toward the bus stop.
"Bye, And don't get into trouble!!! I know you too well!!!!" he screamed, as he felt something begin to grow in his chest, but he did not know what it was. Like the feeling he had when the King had told him Reinette was gone.
He stayed there for an hour and a half, thinking about Rose and her smile. And he cried a bit.
“Well, look who is crying,” stated Mickey as he came upon the Doctor and scared him.
“Mickey!”
“Yeah, that’s me,” he stated back as he stood shaking his head at the Doctor. “You love her still, don’t you? Well, you know what, now it is too late. If there is one thing true about Rose is that she is stubborn. And she wants to forget you.”
“Why?” asked the Doctor as he looked away toward the bus stop.
“Because she loves you too much. And because she fears that you never cared for her. Like I said before, sometimes women need to be told. And sometimes you also need to act upon it.”
“Well, it is too late now,” the Doctor stated as he brushed his hands over his hair.
“Doctor, just wait sometime, let her breathe, and come back to her. She might just be willing to forgive you."
