Old Coach:
Michael New:
New graduated from Cornell University in 1992 after a successful career in the middle- weights. An All-Ivy selection as a senior at 167 pounds, New dropped to 158 pounds and was an Eastern finalist. These were a few of the numerous honors he received during his wrestling career in the Empire State, where he also dominated in the high school ranks at Canastota High School. New placed third as a senior in the state finals at 155 pounds.
New Coach:
Chris Ayres:
Ayres joined the wrestling squad as a walk-on, where he made an immediate impact. While at Lehigh, Ayres established a new school record with 120 career victories. In his junior season Ayres also amassed the most wins in a single season for a Lehigh wrestler - 39 - in 1998. Ayres exploded onto the scene in his first season on the mat as a Mountain Hawk, picking up wins in 11 of his first 13 bouts. Over his four year career, Ayres never missed a dual match. In the summer of 2001 Ayres placed fourth in the U.S. Senior Open Nationals and fourth at the U.S. World Team Trials. He also finished fifth at the 2002 Team Trials.
A former EIWA champion and All-America during his undergraduate career at Lehigh, Ayres joined the coaching staff in June 2001. During his tenure, the Mountain Hawks claimed five straight EIWA team championships and produced 12 All-Americas and two national champions. Ayres worked specifically with five of the All-Americas in all aspects of training.
Basically the new coach is much better than the old coach! And the Jerseys are sick! We dont wear singlets next year, instead we have two peice spandex shorts and t-shirt.
