Today I tested Second Life... Am I the only one to think that SL sucks? Ok.. I don't have a vast knowledge about it but some things were disappointing...
Some pros & cons about it.
The fact that it's an online community that grows fast and enables people to play, chat, meet is kind of cool, right? Maybe that's a tendency that won't stop or fail... We began with foruns, 'my spaces' and now, 3D places.
The bad thing is that you need a good computer, a really efficient connection and time to learn its interface. All of these 3 points make the experience suck a lot!!! You download only 20-30MB of files but what you need to download during your time online is massive and doesn't let you interact like in a MMORPG or messengers. The beginning tutorial is annoying! I spent 2 hours trying to solve everything and happened to find out that only 4 steps in the center of the map would resolve the entire problem ¬¬
I know that games cost 2-3GB of hard disk, but if you don't want to depend so much of your connection, this isn't the best solution. After I pass the tutorial and help map, I looked for other places and went to Brazil.. yes.. home... I was kind of horrified with everything else and just wanted to go home after that annoying experience. I've been using computer since 94 and I believe I'm not a total moron about interfaces.
Well this year I began a Specialization program (a post-graduation one, not master) about Interface Design and Usability, Information Architecture and things related. The first thing we learn is that we need to focus on the user, not on ourselves.. this is important, for example, in Second Life. It's not my fault the interface sucks, neither the time I spend to enjoy it, it's their fault. Course, I have no idea what type of people they intend to serve but if there are too many different people using it, it should be considered.
I'll still try other things there, though frustrated, and I'll talk later about it =)
