Food post

I just keep forgetting to update it or check it. LJ needs to make better smartphone apps. I'd love an Android LJ widget.

Anyways, I sorta had a goal for 2010. In a previous post, I said that I wanted to learn how to cook and I was going to start with the Mayo Clinic's list of 10 Superfoods. Well, I learned how to cook a ton of stuff. I learned a good bit about nutrition and cooking terminology along the way. I have more confidence in the kitchen than I did before. I don't really know much about creating new things, but I can follow directions from a Food Network episode or from a recipe. I didn't stick with Mayo Clinic's list of superfoods, but I'm fine with that.

I did find some good resources along the way:
I downloaded 13 seasons (that's 40 GB) of Good Eats. I don't care much for Alton Brown's comments about the obese, but his shows are made for the kind of person I am. Most of what I learned to cook came from his shows.
Allrecipes.com is my favorite place to find a spur-of-the-moment recipe. I've pulled it up many times in the grocery store. It has a huge database of recipes with reviews on each recipe. I've seen some recipes with thousands of reviews. Also, if you like a recipe, they have a "Recipe Box" to save your favorite stuff.
For nutrition (and for bonus points in A&P 2), I read Michael Pollan's Food Rules. I rather liked this book. It's very short at maybe an hour of reading. I'd be happy to let anyone borrow it.

You can probably guess at the side benefits I've had from cooking at home rather than eating out as much. I've saved money. I've lost weight. My blood pressure is down. I'm sure than at my next physical that my cholesterol numbers will be down as well.

I'm pretty happy with the accomplishment. It's probably the one goal that I've enjoyed the most and got the most back from.
