From my new employer. How nice. The sweatshirt is incredibly boring, though ( Read more... )

Outliners: one of the reasons I am still jealous of Mac users is MORE, last updated in 1991.

but for some things only paper will do. in recent years I have been switching entirely to pencil and black Sakura Pigma Micron (size 05) pens, because they are waterproof, archival, look right, etc.

do you use 3x5s or 4x6s?

On my summer internships, the best boss I had told me to sit in the back in the orientation sessions and sneak out as soon as the sign-up sheet had gone around...

I wonder if it will always remain so. In this case, aside from surface area issues (which might be alleviated by a Zoomworld system as described by Raskin and others), it is still harder to electronically manipulate small pieces of text than small pieces of paper. In theory the electronic manipulation should be easier, being free of physical constraints. I have been wondering whether this is an intrinsic problem with the mouse and what might be done to alleviate it through a superior input method.

3x5's. I'm not so picky about pens -- any decent black rollerball will do.

My boss recommends the orientation to me, and he's no fool. I'm curious how such a thing could be anything more than a colossal waste of time.

Congratulations! Who is this new employer? Or is this a status change with your current one?0

Status change, and thanks! In some ways it's pretty cushy. It's one of those benefits-happy companies and the stock is still doing well. I basically sit around at home all day in front of the computer. Sometimes I try to remember to get dressed. Unpaid leave seems to be accommodated easily, which seems unusual in a large company. And most important in this climate, it's steady work.

The biggest problem, as always, is that it's software engineering, an intrinsically annoying field at its current state of development, and also excessively draining for those of us with avocational pursuits.
