My People, Palin's People, or, Why I Shouldn't Talk About Politics w/ Family

Oct 29, 2008 13:01

Note: both my mom and sister are voting for McCain.

Political "conversation" w/ my mom:

Me: Why are you voting for McCain, and not Obama?
Mom: Obama's a Muslim.
Me: ..uh..no..

All I could really get out of her was that Republicans "are more conservative and have traditional values", as her reasoning for her choice.

W/ Mel:

Mel: Who are you voting for?
Me: Barr.
Mel: Who?
Me: Barr, the Libertarian candidate.
Mel: Well, you know he's not gonna win.
Me: It's unlikely that your guy is gonna win either, and he sure isn't going to win Illinois.
Mel: Well at least I'm not voting for Osama.
Me: You mean Obama.
Mel: ..Osama.
Me: *facepalm*

WTF is going on here? Such horrific ignorance left me speechless. Do they even question any information they are given, or do they just blindly believe anything? It seems that neither my mother nor sister are taking this election too seriously, or they are too close-minded to see anything other than what Fox News (or some other right-wing source) is feeding them.

I half-considered voting for Obama out of spite.
