President's Day: The box

Feb 18, 2020 15:19

Happy Presidents' Day!

Here is Ford's Theatre and the State Box where Abraham Lincoln was shot.

Three of the items in the box are from the assassination night: The picture of George Washington, the sofa where Major Rathbone was sitting, and a carved-back, cane-seat parlor chair.

The rocking chair in which Lincoln sat is owned by the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit.

Ford's Theatre has one of the five flags that adorned the State Box on the night of the assassination. The other four flags are either missing or on display elsewhere.

The State Box is actually two boxes, with a false wall between them. This wall was removed and placed against the back wall when the space was converted into the State Box.
