Happy birthday, Bakelite!!!
February 5, 1909 - Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland announced the creation of Bakelite, the world's first synthetic plastic.
Bakelite became a staple material of the Art Deco, Art Moderne, and Streamline Moderne movements, which embraced modern materials as part of their design aesthetic.
Bakelite was used for everything from radios to telephones, silverware to dishware, jewelry to artwork, dice to cue balls.
