Derrick Bell has died.

He was a legal scholar, the first tenured black man at Harvard Law School, and the first black man to be dean of a law school (not at a historically black college). He founded the field of critical race theory, which explored how racism is embedded in law and legal institutions. His 1973 book, "Race, Racism and American Law," is a classic.
