These photos turned out more "artistic" than "botanical", so I think they deserve an entry of their own.
These are some young trees next to the benches at my favourite outdoor knitting spot. I guess this is one of those modern golden ("Aurea") cultivars of... I don't even know which species, but both the purplish-red flowering female cones and the old cones seems consistent with
Thuja plicata. I have never seen such cones on any other Thuja plant. Now I must watch out for the male cones to see what they are like - if they are eve nstill in "bloom".
Edit to update: Wow, there seem to be male cones in the first photo here, if I have managed to identify them correctly, but they are barely visible at this size of the photo. I cropped out the section below to enlarge it: look at the bluish things on the tips of the twigs on the left side of the branch; I think those are the male cones.
