Before the Gobblers, there were all sorts of terrors that passed through Oxford by whisper. Lyra delighted in every single one--pirates who attacked the ghetto towns on the river's edge, spreading anarchy and discord until the Oxford police finally stepped in; night-ghasts who swooped through the streets from church cemeteries until intervention from a traveling Magisterial exorcist.
Her favorite was the time the town ran deep with the fear of a vampyre who had been stalking the streets. She and Roger crept outside at night and snuck around the college, whispering stories and playing games and "protecting Jordan."
Games which stopped when Mrs. Lonsdale noticed a funny smell clinging to Lyra's clothes, and connected it with complaints from the kitchens about a thief stealing the garlic.
