HELLoooo there. I don't think i've mentioned it to the live journal world directly (you probably all know anyways because i obnoxiously mention it to anyone who will listen) but, starting on December 30th,
I'M GOING AROUND THE WORLD with bff Chloe.
First Stop:
Lonely Planet is pretty much my best friend. I've read the whole fiji book.
And... summed up, its terrifying. Well.. more, it's just not exactlly what I was expecting. When you're not in the resorts, you have to wear clothes that totally cover you. You have to take your shoes off *here* and keep your head down *there*, ask the cheif for permission to enter a village and accept a drink called kava (a mild narcotic that is similar in taste to a murky medicine that has been banned in north america). "Domestic violence is a serious problem in Fiji with sexual abuse and violence on the rise. Therefore many fijian husbands disourage their wives from talking to western travellers." Oh and apparently if female travellers arn't travelling with any males, it is not unusual for fijians to be disrespectful of you. EEEK. It sounds conservative and scary.
But there is this resort that I was reading about in the Mamanuca Group called Beachcomber Island. Chloe doesn't know yet, but, we're going there. It has the reputation of "having the best party atmosphere" in fiji though so I think she'll be down.
The island is 2 hectars at lowtide, has a great garden and is circled by a beautiful beach. It takes 10 minutes to walk around the whole island, which is covered by the resort. There are bunk beds in the 84-bed huge dorm. It costs $75/night which includes buffet style meals, so not too bad.
"Entertainment includes live music and grooving on the sand dance floor."
As a friend put it: To really live, you have to let go of everything safe and jump into the dark.
I've had a lot of fun in the dark.
