Why is Sheppard/Weir pairing called Sparky?

It's been bugging me for a while and nobody I talked to can give me an answer. To me, Sparky is that cola Harper from Andromeda is addicted to. Am I missing something obvious here?

ha! I actually know this one because I asked in my journal the first time I saw it. Anyway, in Cupid Joe Flanigan's character called his girlfriend Sparky or something. So yeah, stupid and obscure.

BUT! I had no idea that it would get much, much stupider and people would start calling it "shweir", which is so unappealing that I just...I can't articulate how icky that sounds.

From someone else who's been baffled by this: a heartfelt thanks for solving the mystery. I absolutely hate pairing names you have no hope in hell of figuring out yourself. (And ITA about "Shweir", even if it is more transparent than "Sparky".)

I love your icon. It's sort of hypnotising.

Also to make this comment have a point (As if Rodney wasn't enough) ship names you can't understand are annoying but Schweir and Spuffy etc just make me want to hit things.

That icon really is lovely - _inbetween_ maede it for me.

As for the portmanteau ship names - they usually sound either silly or stupid or both, but Shweir manages to sound like a disease too. Why do pairings need to have names anyway? (Though I rather like McShep - that one doesn't bother me at all.)
