First, I would like to say that this was supposed to be 2,000 words of Damon/Elena not!fic, where Damon kept appearing back in Elena's life, their relationship gradually building from there. This is not that story--although it remains totally self-indulgent in its quest for happy endings, and should probably be considered an AU just because of that

I've read a lot of the fanfiction.net Delena fics. Yours is definitely in the top 10. It's very mature. I don't agree that this is OOC. I think it ahead of time in characterization. This is completely how I see Damon's character evolving. And it's also how I see Stefan/Elena evolving, then dying off. My biggest fear for Elena is that she will not realize how she feels about Damon until it's too late (that moment in your story made me tear up a little! Identification much? ;-) ). So thanks for this happy ending!

I never bought the original exposition of Damon's character as pure evil (or Stefan as the "good one"). This is series is based on emotions and how they evolve, not on the battle between good and evil (that was much more Buffy). So it should follow that the person who is apparently "good" turns out to be the cause of much pain and death due to the fact that he avoids problems, while the "evil one" is gradually redeemed by his honesty and the way he confronts problems head-on (even if the result is not always pretty). What this show would want to reward, I think, is the will to deal with reality, as unpleasant as it may be, rather than hide away from it.

Anyway, just wanted to say I completely buy your story and I really liked the direct style too. It's difficult to write a love story without making it sappy, and I think you did a great job avoiding that pitfall. Here's hoping for many more stories from you.
