Under the weather and what weather it is!

I've been a bit incommunicado the past few days due to general busyness and now being ill. I seem to have two ailments at the same time: I have both a sore throat/cold and upset digestion. Fortunately it's freezing-raining outside right now so I don't feel bad about staying in all day. I'ts been a fun couple of days, though. Thursday we had a ( Read more... )

That's funny...I have a theory that kids don't notice the cold as much as adults do or at least they don't remember it as part of an experience. I don't recall being cold at all in Hawaii (although I do remember the near-endless rainfall). My only memory of being cold when I was little was one day at Monroe Elementary when I'd worn a dress to school and it suddenly had become unseasonably windy and cold and we were all outside shivering and waiting for recess to be over. I had squatted down and covered my legs with my dress so I was just a gingham lump with tangled red hair. The playground monitor thought this was hilarious and started laughing SO hard. I must have looked pretty silly.

Good idea with the rocks--there certainly is no shortage of them here. I've been pining for my hot water bottle and was plotting to buy one but then I realized that we only have hot water when we turn on the heaters. Our teakettle accomodates only two servings of tea so using boiled water would itself be compliated. Oh well...maybe rocks are a more appropriate technology here.

You've certainly been invited here repeatedly by Abdullah's elderly mom. She's hilarious--when she talks she basically repeats Muslim prayers constantly with a few conversational words sprinkled in. Also, she speaks a different dialect than her kids so they often can't understand each other. Alex and I are quite amused when we imagine a meeting between you and her. However, I'd say that as much as Alex would love to see you, I don't think you'd enjoy your visit much. It will be warmer in the spring but just the arrival journey is quite arduous, to say nothing of the cultural oddities. You're probably better off staying at home, taking care of moving in to your new house, and settling into your new job. Wait until one of is somewere like Italy or Chile or something.
