Mmmm... Alex just returned from a Friday afternoon/evening (the sabbath) meal at Abdullah's house. It was so good! It was a variation on maqlooba ("upside-down"), the dish that he described in his LJ. This version was a tasty rice pilaf with pine nuts, almonds, and chick peas, served with chicken and a soup made of greens I didn't have a chance to identify. We then retired to the sitting-room and chatted and ate sweets and drank copious amounts of tea and coffee. One thing that is peculiar about this area is that tea and coffee are often served at the same time, while in the US it is generally believed that if you have one you don't need the other. This evening was a nice one because it was our first time hanging out with other people our age--most of Alex's friends have been traveling in Syria since school was let out. I wanted to go to Syria to visit Damascus, the longest continually inhabited city in the world, but the visa was prohibitively expensive. Abdullah’s sister (who’s name keeps slipping my mind) was super sweet-all of the women I have met here have been so warm and kind.
It seems that we’re about to go out to a disco of some kind, which I imagine will be totally bizarre, so I have to skeedadle. Happy Friday!
