OK, I don't know what's up with people going crazy judgmental this week on LJ, and always on the most inoffensive posts, as if needing something new or not needing something old is excess or waste. I really don't understand where this holier than thou attitude is coming from. I mean, I understand feeling a desire to speak out against a culture of mass consumption, but I have seen personal attacks against a couple of the most responsible, least frivolous/wasteful people I know, obviously by individuals who don't actually know them or anything about them. And rather than admit to making a hasty assumption, they get all crazy defensive. And yeah, there were two actual examples on my friends page this week, different people, different haters.
I realize that not all of you have these posts on your friends page, and I want you to understand. BUT I don't want to start anything, so in my re-enactment I will replace the actual items being discussed with something else.. something ordinary... like Underpants!
Scenario 1: Poster: Hey, I got me some nice new underpants today!
Hater: OMG! I hear people complaining they don't have money, yet u go buy underpants!?!? What are you wearing now??? Don't you already have underpants?? So wasteful!!
Poster: Um, yeah I do have some underpants. But the same pair isn't always right for all occasions. Also, my old underpants are getting pretty old. And I can afford them, I do work after all.
Hater: I'm not judging BUT buying new things is terrible and horrible and so many people spend money on things that their lives don't depend on like trans-continental travel and exotic pets!
Poster: Dude... I just wanted underpants......
Scenario 2: Poster: I cleaned out my drawers and got rid of some old underpants. And when I ripped them up it was kinda fun, almost cathartic, getting out a little aggression.
Hater: *GASP* How could you get rid of underpants! Someone could have used those!
Poster: Well, they were pretty well worn, and had lots of holes. They didn't actually cover my butt anymore. I asked but nobody
wanted them. So I ripped em up.
Hater: Such violence! It's terrible! This is why we have war and famine! It wouldn't have been fun if your family had been ripped apart!
Poster: Um... they were underpants, not people.
Hater: You should have repaired them and donated them to the needy! *SOBS* People today are so wasteful! Think of the PLANET!
