Prompt: Any superhero universe or cop show. Any. Sometimes it doesn't pay to save the world.

Three times now, he’s put the world ahead. Stopped Schmidt, put the plane in the ice, thought that’d be the end of it. Fought aliens twelve days out of the ice, helped stop the invasion. And then Project Insight, when it turned out Hydra was never gone at all.

Fought Bucky for the sake of the world. Hurt Bucky so that millions would live.

For this. For scapegoating and sham trials and people who’ve already decided who to string up to salvage their pride.

He lets Stark and Natasha handle it, first. Lets them try. He’s looking for Bucky, trying to make sure he’s not hurt and alone and afraid. Three years out of the ice, three times saving the world - three times he thinks Bucky is dead, before Bucky finally lets Steve find him.

And then. Then Stark contacts Sam.

He saves them at some cost to Bucky. Every time. And Stark promises they have it in hand.

Scapegoating. Sham trials. Footage of Bucky on the bridge, mission after mission after mission in the files. Someone has to pay.

What’d he even bother fighting for, if this is how it ends?

When he’s more Bucky than not, which is more often as days of quiet pass, Bucky says, “Oughta let ‘em have me, Stevie.”

“That’s never gonna happen,” Steve says. Sam goes back to DC, tries to help with Natasha and Stark and Banner, and even Coulson, when he comes back from the dead, because why the fuck not. Ms. Potts and Hill, they have some plan in play, and they promise to call Steve when they need him.

The needs of the many, Steve thinks, watching one of the films Sam swears is vital, Bucky asleep and slumped against him, no longer outweigh the needs of the one.

Rating: PG

Prompt: any, any, Our love was doomed, / a burning building, / a broken neck. / But nothing since / you and me / even feels like love.

He spent two and a half thousand years trying to recreate what the four of them had together -- what he and Methos had been. For a thousand years, they rode across the world, the sun at their backs, nothing able to stand against them. For a thousand years, Pestilence and Death were side by side.

He found Famine. He found War. But Death -- no matter where he searched, Kronos did not find Death.

Oh, he tried. With Methos beside him, there could be nothing less than dominion over all the earth, and with Caspian and Silas behind them, there would be an ocean of red. It would be as glorious as their thousand year reign, but this time, it would never end.

And now... now, he has Methos in his grasp again and he knows that three thousand years of want shall at last be fulfilled.

Prompt: any book. any. Looking back on younger days the view stretched on for miles/We charged into our future with laughter and smiles (Edwin McCain - Jesters, Dreamers, & Thieves)

He knows that if Shane were still around, he'd suggest another way. Shane had tried to leave the life, and they'd provided him a respite, for a time, until violence had to be done. Shane saved them, and Bob knows that Ma and Pa still miss him, still talk about him sometimes.

Bob learns to use guns because he misses Shane. Not just to hunt or for defense, like Pa. Bob teaches himself trick shooting, though he doubts he’ll ever be as good as Shane.

The next time someone comes to town looking for a fight, Bob’ll be able to protect everyone, like Shane.

(Despite how much it hurt Shane, he made it look so easy. But it’s not that easy. Shane tried to find something new because it was so easy. And if he were here -

But he’s not here. Bob, and Ma, and Pa are, and Bob’s getting so good.

The only real thing wrong with you, Shane once told Chris, is that you’re young. And that’s somethin’ time can always cure.

Bob’s young yet. And the next time someone looking for trouble comes to town…)

Why does it hurt so much? she asks her king, holding close one she might have loved.

Because it was real, her king answers, and lets her be.
