When the sun hits her just right, Ben almost forgets Manticore. She’s golden and azure and so very bright-so holy. She smiles at him, holds out her hands, whispers secrets. Her eyes hide messages meant for him alone, and on his knees he listens. He listens and hears and knows.

Yes, Lady, he answers in his heart. I’ll sacrifice to you.

As he leaves, a cloud covers the sun and the Lady’s light dims, but in his heart, she’s still burning brightly.

She waits in the dark apartment, curled up on his bean bag. His orange drink tastes purple and the chips are stale. The computer keeps beeping and blinking, like it’s trying to tell her something, but she doesn’t know the language.

Eliot opens the door, silently walking in. He reaches for the light-switch, but pauses. “Parker,” he says. “It’s time.”

She shakes her head. It’s not time. It’ll never be time until Hardison is back to translate what the computer’s saying.

Sophie steps around Eliot and she does hit the light. Nate stays in the hall, a glass of alcohol in his hand. “Please, Parker,” Sophie murmurs. “For me.”

Parker closes her eyes and hums the theme from Star Wars, putting her fingers in her ears.

She’s not going anywhere until Hardison comes home.

Eliot turns off the light when they leave, and Parker doesn’t wipe away her tears.

“Hey, Preacher,” Vin murmured, his voice barely heard over the rain.

“Yes, Vin?” Josiah responded, shifting closer.

“Tell me…” Vin paused to catch his breath, and Josiah gently grasped his hand. “A story…” Vin coughed and Josiah carefully wiped away the blood trickling over his lips.

“Once, there was a family,” Josiah began quietly. “A woman and her husband, their sons and their sons’ wives. Sickness suddenly struck their town and the menfolk died.”

Vin choked, so Josiah turned him on his side till he caught his breath again. Josiah kept talking, calmly telling him, “The elder daughter-in-law left, to return to her own people, but the younger said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you.’ And so she followed her mother-in-law back to her hometown and there she made a new life for herself.”

Josiah placed a hand on Vin’s chest, waiting-no breath stirred his young friend’s body, so Josiah whispered, “Go with whatever god you believe in and find whatever peace you can, Vin Tanner.” He bowed his head and prayed; over the rainstorm, he heard the sound of crows.

Retribution would be had, he knew, because Chris Larabee possessed no forgiving mood, and Josiah would exact vengeance for each labored breath Vin forced himself to take just to see his brothers again.

Prompt: disappointment

He didn’t kill the bastard who killed one of his own, didn’t rip him apart, didn’t cut him open and make him bleed before he died. He didn’t make Ari hurt before that bullet tore into him, and that bothers Jethro. He doesn’t feel that Kate’s avenged because Ari died too easily.

He’ll live with the disappointment, though, because Ari’s dead and the others need him strong.

Well now, Alistair says, smirking. This is interesting, kiddo. Who knew you had a heart? I’m sure Famine would find that surprising, since he searched and searched… Alistair clenches his fist, wrist deep in Dean’s chest, and twists.

Dean whimpers, in too much pain to scream. Alistair laughs, leaning in to kiss his lips, swallowing down the sounds.

You’re so weak, Dean. Where’s the monster I made? My star pupil? Life softened you up again, and that’s… disappointing. Alistair pulls his hand out, Dean’s heart sitting pretty on his palm. Here’s your juicy center, Dean, Alistair purrs, sibilant soft, and takes a bite.

Dean wakes with tears on his face, curled up on the covers, to Sam staring at him.

Sam doesn’t ask, and Dean wouldn’t answer if he did.
