Oh, man. My usual reaction to serial killers (in fiction, I mean, thank God) is a kind of furious frightened contempt: You make people die and you think that's impressive? People are designed to die! Wow, you're as powerful as a clump of arterial plaque! But these Winchesters aren't all abstract superiority and pseudo-depth, they're just doing what comes naturally if you happen to be stripped down to just a couple of elements of what makes us human. They're elements I recognize and respect, within limits.

Or maybe it's just that I've felt that flash of wanting to defend my loved ones, wishing there was someone to attack, the righteous anger that's so seductive. In our lives it's seldom that simple. The threats aren't tangible enough to grasp and break.

Anyway. This is awesome.

Mom had been kind to John, too kind. Tried to take him from Mary. So Mary had John beat her and leave her alive, a worse fate than death.

Okay, this line disturbed me most of all. This story is pure horror. Lots of me doesn't want to read it, but at the same time I really want to know what happens next!

I think I need to quickly find some wee!chesters for balance.
