Hey,
I've always wanted to write a fanfic with a storyline that included all my favorite political comedians together, but have had no ideas. Then I read a fic entitled "A Colbert Carol" which was beautifully written by the creative
reseda_ptah and I wrote my comparative essay on the differences between Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, thus I came up with an idea. I hope it turns out okay. *crosses fingers*
Title: The Satirical Scrooge
Author: me
Characters: Bill Maher, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, George Carlin, Penn & Teller, and Heather Headley (yes, her). Also, Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.
Pairings: Jon/Stephen (in later chapters), Bill/Heather (in later chapters), and Bill O'Reilly/Ann Coulter (in later chapters)
Rating: PG-13 to R (for most chapters)
Genre: AU, angst
Synopsis: The story is too complex to explain in one paragraph so I will just say this. It is basically a spin-off of A Christmas Carol, minus a few characters (no Tiny Tim and Three Ghosts. sorry...) with a coupe of different themes. Still Christmas, of course. :-)
Disclaimer: I do not own these people. This is strictly an alternative universe. I own only this fic. Oh, and my muse for the story is "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, along with
reseda_ptah 's fic, "A Colbert Carol".
I decided to write a prologue first before getting into the first chapter so that things could be explained. So here it is. Enjoy!
Stephen Colbert was dead to begin with. No matter how sad his death was, it was an undeniable fact. His burial was registered and his tombstone was already made. It is fair to say that Stephen had been dead for quite some time. He just didn’t know it. Those who knew him well through out his life, had watched him turn into a heartless zombie.
His death was painful for those who had known him well - however small the number. Bill Maher was one of them. Bill knew Stephen was dead - dead as a doornail, so to speak. Despite the sincere friendship between them, Bill was blind to the fact that Stephen was headed for certain doom. Simply, this was because he was headed in the same direction himself.
Bill and Stephen had been political satirists, working together under the same roof for many years. They fed each other ideas and jokes to tell the public, and even gave speeches together. The town they resided in was a political hotbed for conservatives and liberals. Both had their own outspoken activists and speakers, seeking to win the hearts and the minds of the town’s people. However, the conservatives seemed to always to sway the majority enough to gain power.
Like Stephen and many other liberals, Bill strived from an early age to reveal the conservatives’ absurdities and prejudices to the people. What made Bill and Stephen stand out amongst the rest of the outspoken liberals was that they acted like their conservative counterparts in order to beat them at their own game, so to speak. It was a revolutionary idea that gave the two of them more fodder for their political comedy speeches than anything else.
The other liberals seemed optimistic about their new idea and helped them generously to gain press. The only thing people didn’t expect to come out of Bill and Stephen’s idea was how much affect it would have on their personality and relationship with others, especially their friends and loved ones. They became harsh and unforgiving, bitter and stubborn like the conservatives.
The town’s people had mixed feelings about Bill and Stephen. When giving their political comedy speeches to the people, Bill and Stephen were enthusiastic and truthful. The people were inspired and aroused by their words. However, most of the town’s people were hesitant to approach them on the street or visit them at their offices. When giving their weekly conferences with their conservative counterparts and sometimes with their fellow liberals, Bill and Stephen were aggressive and rigid. They rarely pardoned any opinion that was unlike their own and were quick to condescend the person for it. People skills were not their greatest attribute.
People began to worry about them, yet still remained hopeful that their idea would bring about positive results. Stephen's death was the crumbling block on their idea's foundation and brought it all down. Most of their friends that they had began to desert Bill after that and fewer people came to hear him speak. Since Stephen's death, Bill became isolated, withdrawn, even more bitter and cynical than before.
