The TV Season That Was '04-'05

Well, there was some really excellent TV, and some TV that jumped all the sharks at SeaWorld. Possibly the Pacific ocean, even.

Shows Safely on the Beach, Sipping Lemonade:

  • House. What can I say about House? It's snarky, it's brilliant, and it keeps getting better. My heart overflows with love and I pray that it shall not become shark bait next year.

  • The Amazing Race. I am firmly in the camp that Rob and Amber greatly entertain me, and I loved seeing them on the show. I couldn't apologize for it, I could only sit back and enjoy. Plus, there wasn't quite as much bunching this year, so good on them.

Shows That Had Jumped the Shark But Recovered:

  • Survivor. Now, every season of Survivor is hit or miss. Last season, it missed. This season? It was ON. Tom is by far the most deserving winner in the history of the show, and for once, all the pretty boys weren't the first to be voted out. It was a good dozen episodes of hardcore plotzing and eyecandy. Love.

  • I hesitate to put The Apprentice in this category, because it sucked so much more than Survivor did. Except, last year was terrible for TA, so in a way, its shark bites did heal. Nevertheless, it's still grossly deformed and probably won't ever recover.

Shows That Started Out With Sharks Circling, But Pulled Themselves Out of the Water, and Then Got Cancelled

  • Jack & Bobby. My summary each Wed night used to be, "Get off that show and come to my house, Matt Long." Then, slowly, I think it found its footing, or else I just forgot about how I wanted the show to be a mystery versus normal teen drama, and became slightly less focused on Crazy Mom near the end. And then it got cancelled. BTW, Matt Long? My offer still stands.

Shows Currently Being Digested by Great Whites:

  • Charmed Smallville. My dear, dear show. What hath Almiles done to you? Please get better, somehow. Please?

  • Lost. Lost, you lost me. My bitterness for Boone reigns supreme, and no amount of prediction on my part could prepare me. THE ISLAND THE ISLAND. I see sharks circling THE ISLAND. Big, hungry, impossible sharks conjured by Walt. You started off brilliant though. It's a shame you couldn't hold out like House did.

  • Alias. Wow, but did you fall, and fall HARD. Did millions of sharks break your fall? Looks like it. I couldn't care less about this season. It was nearly a chore.

  • The O.C.. Like J&B, you really picked up in the last few episodes. But that doesn't erase the rest of the season. Man.

Well, overall, a lot of my shows declined. Rapidly. It's very sad, but at the same time, some of the shows that were barely average before had fantastic seasons (Survivor). And it seems like more new good dramas came about this year, and lots seemed to be renewed. I loved loved loved Lost, but it grew old to me. And House, my new baby, I hope you don't meet the One Great First Season fate that befell The O.C.
