What Freedom Means [15]

OMG, he's writing again.

The trip home from the clinic was interesting. Tal'ena thanked me for defending her, which I simply nodded. Jeff then asked me about the logic underlying my actions, which struck me as somewhat odd. "Might I ask why?" I asked. "Certainly. I am somewhat surprised that you were able to act against the two would be robbers. One of your directives is ' a morph shall not injure a human', is it not?" I shook my head. "My list of directives are as follows: 1: A morph shall not kill a human, nor cause excessive injury. 2: A morph shall take action to prevent harm to self or other morphs, unless in direct contradiction to Directive 1. 3: A morph shall follow all rules, orders, or directives given to him in the follow order of precedence, unless said rules, orders, etc. are in contradiction to to rules 2 or 1. the order of precedence is as follows: internal directives programmed at the factory, federal law, state law, local law, orders given by Masters, orders given by other humans, and finally orders given by higher ranking model morphs." I paused a bit. "Do you wish me to explain my logic chain now?" Jeff nodded while driving. "Although I think I can guess what happened, I want to hear it from you." I nodded. "Their order of 'you will come with us' was ranked next to last on the precedence chain, and in fact was overridden by local, state, and federal law. Directive Two was invoked when the two criminals attempted to forcibly kidnap the two of us by threatening greivous harm with the knife and other weapons. The reason why I went to Tal'ena's aid was due to a recently activated Directive 10, which states that I am to come to my mate's aid when possible. The criminals suffered no more then bruises from my efforts, although I was injured in a manner that has nearly exhausted my reserve supply of nanites." Jeff nodded. "Ok, that's a valid chain. You did OK. I have noticed that you've had some rather interesting anomalies pop up in the time I've known you. With your permission, I'd like a specialist to examine your programming and see if there are any adjustments that might be needed. She'll also replenish the nanites, as she is fully licensed from Bio-Gen to perform such work." While I visibly cringed at the thought, it did make some sense. Tal'ena hugged me. "It'll be OK. I think it's just a knowledge upload that's needed, really. You've been kept in the dark by that last master for quite some time, unfortunately. Besides, I'll make certain that no changes are made without my explicit approval." Jeff looked at her. "Really? what give you the authority to demand that?" Tal'ena smile was one of the crocodile which knew that lunch had just wandered into view. "I am the one that runs Jack's establishment, which gives me supervisory rights for all the morphs there except Jack himself. Therefore, I am entitled to have a say in how the other morphs that are there on a permanent basis and that perform work at the establishment are treated, which includes programming issues, If I recall my programming correctly." I looked at the rear view mirror of the car, and saw the look of resignation on Jeff's eyes. "All right, you win. But I feel that I should at least have some input. I'm responsible for both of you, remember." Tal'ena nodded. "Of course. And I also want Eddie's input on the matter as well, especially if the programming changes involve any adjustments to hi personality. He may have his faults and quirks, but that's why I love him." She looked at me as she said the last sentence, and I acted in a mock-offended manner. "Say, I resemble that remark!" I said as I buried my muzzle in her neck fur.

During the next two weeks, the house had received a few calls from several people, asking if was still there, and either asked if I was availible for purchase or rent to renovate other vehicles. Apparently, word had gotten out about the car, and people wanted me to renovate their cars. Jeff had filled me in on this after the car trip, and stated that he was thinking of starting a small business operation for this, and wanted to know if I was interested in doing this. I talked it over with Tal'ena, and agreed. The first car arrived the next morning with it's owner, and we talked about what needed to be done on it, and the price for the work. An agreement was struck, and I got to work right away on it. Again, parts needed to be ordered, which meant a week long delay in the job. The programming technician, Sally, arrived the afternoon after I placed the parts order, and she explained to myself, Jeff, and Tal'ena what she was going to do. She also plugged my arm into a device that would replenish my reserve of nanites, which would take the rest of the evening. Fortunately, the device was mobile, and in fact had a sling attached to it for just a reason. My last memory of the evening was her plugging the programming and analysis console into the small port on the back of my head after dinner.
