THIS IS YOUR SIGN UP POST
Welcome, welcome, to our first Dark Challenge, one in a series of low stress mini-challenges loosely based on Dark Magic in the Potterverse. This is intended to be a low stress challenge, encouraging short pieces of 5k or fewer words, drabbles, drawbles, fanvids, graphics for the community (e.g. icons, banners etc), crafts and meta. There is no prompt claiming for this challenge, other than in the case of meta, in respect of which see more detail in the 'Posting and Rules' section. In relation to the fanwork prompts, you may create something for as many or as few of the prompts as you wish, or create something for your own prompt. The prompts we have included are intended to spark inspiration, but you are under no obligation to use them. You simply have to incorporate the overall 'theme' of Imperius, which we have defined very broadly as the following:
- Being forced to act against one's will;
- A complete or partial loss of control;
- Inducement to commit crime;
- Performing magic beyond age/capability;
- Mind control;
- Memory loss/addled mind;
- A false sense of happiness/security;
- Resisting adversity;
- Dark magic leaving its mark;
- Feeling pain after previously feeling numb.
For your sign up you simply need to include an age statement confirming you are over 18, and let us know that you would like to participate, stating if you intend to write some meta or create a fanwork. Feel free to bombard us with any gifs, pictures or whatever you like to confirm your interest! Comments will not be screened.

PLOT PROMPTS
(1) Now that it's over and the curse has been lifted, things were supposed to get better. So why does the [character of choice] want nothing more than to go back to the days, when somebody else pulled all the strings?
(2) The Imperius curse or Memory Charms as a form of conversion therapy.
(3) Dark magic leaving its mark.
(4) [Character of choice] can't move. Their legs are heavy and they can hear footfall. They want to run, but they can't. It's everybody's nightmare, but this isn't a dream.
(5) [Character of choice] tell themselves they were acting under duress when they did all those terrible things. But when it's dark, the fact that they simply did those things because they wanted to, gets harder to suppress.
(6) At night, on the Janus Thickey ward, there's a different sort of therapy (taking advantage of the helpless).
(7) "I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity" - the impact of trying to resist Imperius has left its own impact on [character of choice].
(8) Everything is wonderful and they are happy together. But things aren't always what they seem.
(9) In an effort to subdue (subjugate) the would-be hero of the wizarding world, Voldermort instructs his Death Eaters to multiply the strength of the Imperius Curse on Harry Potter, but serving numerous masters has a side effect nobody could ever have predicted.
(10) They don't want to do it. They have to. What comes a surprise is how much they enjoy it.

META QUESTIONS
(1) During the first war, Sirius Black suspected Remus Lupin of operating under the Imperius curse. When you learned about Imperius, were there any central characters you suspected might have been cursed?
(2) We know JKR creates analogies with social, religious and/or political events within the universe she has created in the Harry Potter series. What (if anything) do you think JKR might have had in mind when she created the Imperius and the sense of distrust its use during the first war created amongst allies?
(3) What makes Imperius Unforgivable, when the use of Obliviate or other memory modification charm is not treated in the same way, or even considered to be Dark magic?
(4) Falling in love with a Veela is like being placed under Imperius. Discuss.
(5) Unforgivable acts become forgivable when used for a good purpose. Discuss, with reference to Harry's attitude towards and use of Unforgivables.
FANWORKS: In order to make the theme as open as possible, we have defined Imperius broadly. This means your fanwork does not have to deal with the Imperius Curse itself. Your fanworks can utilise any of the elements set out above in any way you choose. Be inventive! You do not have to expressly use the Imperius Curse in your drabbling, drawbling, epic writing, vid making, knitting or meta posts. We want you to have fun and be inspired.
All finished pieces should be sent to hpdarkarts@gmail.com when complete. You can submit pieces up until the posting date, and if you have something which you finish during posting week, we will accept anything that comes in while the submissions for the challenge are posting. We are really asking for sign ups just to get a sense of how many people are interested in participating. There is no penalty for dropping out, and we won't shout! In order to post one fanwork a day for a week we only need seven people to sign up, so please do consider taking part. If we have more than seven sign ups, we will post more than one piece on any given day.
META: You will note, we welcome meta for this challenge and we will run the meta a little differently to the fanworks. Part of the fun of meta posts can be the discussions generated by these posts, and hence we will be giving those who wish to post a meta discussion the option of self-posting during the week of the challenge. Prompts for meta will be assigned on a first come, first served basis, and we are very happy to offer you specific guidance if you wish, although a few thoughts are just as valid as a detailed academic essay! Go wild. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, that's also fine. Please just email us at hpdarkarts@gmail.com to express your interest in meta, letting us know what prompt you would like to write for, or to suggest your own topic.
