Re: Remus
I wondered today which Harry Potter character I would choose to take out of the book and make real, if possible. The answer was immediate in forthcoming. Remus. Now, other times it may be Draco Malfoy or Severus Snape, even Harry at times, but I think that generally, it would be Remus (Not the movie Remus. I love David Thewlis, but he is NOT the Remus described in the books. And, what's with the Hitler 'stache?). He's the perfect mixture of sensitive and dominant. I know that I need a dominant man, but sensitive's something that I appreciate as well.
So, I've been skimming--because my life is gone. I have no time, therefore no reading--over a few fics and I have found some pet peeves. I develop them pretty easily.
1. Non-guilty Remus: Of course he's going to be guilty. That's his freaking personality.
2. Glamorous lycanthropy: Ummm... no. It's not glamorous nor is it something to seek after, unless your pure evil like Greyback. It's painful and it means that you are endangering other people.
3. Remus "embracing" his lycanthropy: See number 1
4. Hermione turning: Really? Seriously? Are you just that lazy? Hermione would be far too careful to let anyone do that, and Remus would never forgive himself if he was the one to do it. So, just no. So many good stories have been ruined by that. Also refer to 2.
5. Werewolf Hermione being pregnant: Uh, think logically people. How does that even make sense? Even if she could change her entire physiology without having a miscarriage--umm, really?-- spending that much energy once a month would kill both the mother and the child. I read a story that wasn't that great, but an enjoyable read nonetheless (especially since I am a sucker for unrequited love stories that end up well--as long as there is no weak!Hermione or suicidal thoughts or anything. C'mon people) and Hermione had to be a werewolf in order to have Lupin's children at all. Say what?
6. Them falling into bed together: I realize that a good PWP, if it is being true to the category, has no plot. Even most one shots need some leeway on the plot department. But there are two types of stories: Plot driven and character driven. If you don't have a plot, people, you need real characters. So they can't be suddenly tearing at each others clothes, enjoyable as that may be.
7. Using Teddy as a way to get Hermione and Remus to hook up: He's a child people! He can be a central part of the story, but if you're just using him... ugh. That's gross.
8. His werewolf being another person that he can talk to: Huh? I don't get how that works. At all. Explain the logic here, please.
9. Details of past relations with Sirius: I am not in the least bit a slash girl. At all. I find it a bit squicky, just because I have no inclinations towards homosexuality at all, so seeing it described in detail is a bit weird for me. Also, why can't they just have been friends. I understand that it makes for a good story line and everything, but it is in almost every Remus fic. Even het fics. Why is it so impossible for people to view the marauders (because, lets face it, its in most marauders fics) as guys who are just close friends? I know this may sound a bit homophobic, which I'm not, but I don't understand why it is in every fic.
It's atrociously late (when I have to get up so early), so tschüss. I may choose to edit or update this later. Sorry if it makes no sense or if it's too ranty. I plead tiredness
P.S. I am attempting (for the how-manyth time?) to abandon my fanfic reading, at least mostly, but I will hopefully continue writing (tall order there! No inspiration for my poor muse, who hasn't liked me lately anyways). I am particularly inspired to work on my RL/HG one right now. I hope that I can actually finish one of my novel length fics sometime soon.
