I have a confession. I have been avoiding this one. It's for the same reason that I avoid songs that remind me of ex-girlfriends. I am happy to move on with my life. It is not healthy to focus too much on the past.
But I guess that a quick visit will not hurt.
When I was a junior in high school, the Valentine's Day dance was a Sadie Hawkins dance. The girl was supposed to ask the guy. I knew that no girl was going to ask me, especially not the girl who had just moved into my neighborhood. She was cute. She was a freshman. She had only been around for about a month, not enough time to really know anyone. So I asked her and she said yes. We agreed to meet at the dance.
A couple of days before the dance, she asked me if it was OK if she brought a female friend along who was supposed to meet another guy there. It would not interfere with our date, she said. She just wanted this friend to have someone around in case things did not work out. No prob, said I. I was always willing to make a new friend.
As usual, things did not go as planned.
The girl I was to meet, K, was late. I was hanging around in the lobby, dressed pretty nicely if I do say so myself. Couple after couple walked in to the sounds of 80's pop. I could see plenty of kids in the gymnasium, some dancing, some "too cool" or perhaps too shy to dance. I nervously checked my teeth as I heard teachers taking bets as to whether my date would show.
Eventually, she did. I would be lying if I said that she was the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen. She was indubitably pretty. But, you know, she was a high school girl. A bit self conscious. A bit awkward in a dress that she probably would not have many opportunities to wear. But pretty nonetheless and at that moment, she was my life preserver.
She gave me a hug and I could not help but hear money changing hands behind me. I idly wondered who had bet in my favor. K then pulled back and introduced me to her friend, S.
S was slim. K was curvaceous. S was dressed in a simple dress. K looked like she was ready for a night on the town. Both girls were a little shy, but while K moved like a cat in a room of new people, wary until she knew whether the audience was allergic or what have you; S seemed more like a mouse in a room filled with owls, snakes, cats, weasels, coyotes, and every other predator known to mankind.
K gained her bearings and then pulled me into the gymnasium and onto the dancefloor and told S to begin looking for the guy she had come to meet. So we danced and laughed and joked and had a great time. Things were running pretty smoothly until we both noticed that S looked pretty down. K and S went to talk and when they came back, it was announced. They had decided to share me!
Um, what?
As an incentive, not that I really needed one to make a person smile, K pulled me outside for a bit and kissed me passionately. She told me that she really liked me but she also wanted S to be happy since S was the first friend that she had made at the school. Being an average teenage male, all bloodflow to my brain had pretty much stopped at the kiss. She could have told me to shave my hair into a mohawk, dye it red and begin clucking like a chicken and I would have done it.
So, I danced fast dances with both girls, slow dances alternated between them. I did my best to make them both smile and got the drinks when they were thirsty.
During one of the slow dances with S, she started getting closer to me than I was comfortable. Not that she was not attractive, but I had just kissed K! I pointed this out. S told me that K was just using me to make the guy she liked jealous. She told me that I deserved better than K and that she thought I was very cute. I did not believe her.
That's when the fire alarm went off.
The gymnasium was evacuated. Six fire trucks came. No fire was found. What was found, by S and I, was K making out with the guy she liked.
Oh. Well, then.
Everyone was eventually let back in for the rest of the dance. Another slow song was played and this time I let S kiss me.
We agreed to go out for a movie at our next opportunity. She chose Mannequin. It was a silly movie, but it was fun.
She was my first girlfriend. We dated on and off for the rest of the time I was in high school. And whenever I hear the theme song from that movie, I think of her.
We are friends now. She is married with several kids. I can listen to this song without feeling anything but a slight tinge of nostalgia. Which is good, because to tell the truth, I would probably hate this song if it were not for that. Starship is nowhere near as high on my scale as Jefferson Airplane. Grace Slick, what became of you?!
