I am a useless blogger atm. I am blaming school and a well practised ability of avoiding doing things.
Newcastle Festival.
A group of Dunedin and New Scotland members headed south for the Newcastle festival on Saturday 12th February. Despite the variety of transport arrangements and departure days and times we all made it to the College in time to have a quick practice of the Display in the main hall, locate the room we had been allocated to and find the all important cuppa before the competition started!
The day itself is a wonderful mixture of catching up with old friends, having the opportunity to perform in a large space, pizza suppers and then dancing the night away. The competition is really just an excuse for a big get-together and large dance!
The ladies team had a long wait before they went out to perform (we were the last ladies team) but eventually we had our chance and despite the initial nerves waiting for the tinkle of the adjudicators bell, it felt like we all enjoyed the dancing (especially follow me home). The mixed team didn't have to wait until the very end which was good. The scores were Ladies 172, Mixed 179.
The Display! The dances chosen and choreographed by RS and JH had a military theme (although the less said about the teams marching skills the better!). Many thanks to both LB and JVo for providing the wonderful music that we danced to, without their contribution the Display would not have had the same impact on the audience. Certainly as a dancer the change in tempo and instrument for the last dance helped to provide the energy and motivation to dance the last dance in the display with enthusiasm and a smile. Whilst the team came off the dance floor with a huge sense of achievement (we had finally danced it without any major mishaps) there was genuine surprise when the result was announced that we were this years proud owners of the Mabel Ellison Trophy!! Then reality hit, we had to do it again at the evening dance... So after the interval it was time to relocate the camouflage trousers and energy for the second performance of the display. All in all a fun filled day with much dancing, socialising and the feeling of “a job well done”.
